Compensators

    Hi All,
I raised a compensator post about 5 years ago as it rattled a bit and had occasional shitty starts.  I have a 2007 model which is supposed to be one of the worst.  I never did anything about it.  Never seen a spec of metal on Plug magnet last 4 primary oil changes since then.  A bit of searching and I like the Darkhorse Rubber bushed ones.  Anyone running these compensators?  Sounds expensive but look superior in engineering than some of the All Steel ones with ramps.  Getting tired of the noise and occasional hard starts.
    Any thoughts ?

You probably have already but before spending the coin, make sure it's not your starter clutch, can make similar horrible noises and similar symptoms.

    Hi Vic
I'm pretty sure compensator as the noises are distinctly coming from the front of the Primary.  But yea I haven't found much feedback on the Darkhorse compensators other than blokes saying they build the best HD cranks around.  Company has a good reputation.  it is an expensive mod as I need to buy a new rotor as well for the 2007.  Being a cheap ass per usual I considered just buying a compensator eliminator.  I stretch her legs once in a while but dont flog it much.  Some dudes on net reckon they are fine but the more I think about if if HD went to all the trouble to reduce engine pulse thru drivetrain with compensators there must be a reason.
    Thanks for input man.

Jersey the latest hd one that will fit your bike works good, an out primary case with the built oil scoop is handy or you have to glue one in yours. Dunno much about the darkhorse one, never had the need to look into them.

Lots of stuff about them on the yankee forums like hdtechtalk and hdforums.com

I don’t have any personal experience

    Thanks Mate

I'll have a look around a bit more over there.
Might be easier to just buy a HD or Baker or something else readily available here.
I asked Darkhorse if they had an Australian distributor a week ago and No response.
Been living with it for a while and not in a hurry.  Appreciate any feedback on what you guys have done or hear good reports about.  Have read a couple messages from guys installing new HD ones and within a year doing it again.  I only want to do it once.  This is my forever bike.  I may buy or build another one but I wont sell this one.

Just a note , my 2006 road king started to do the rattle thing in the compensator. when I took the cover off for a look, the big nut holding it in/together,  was loose. , tightened it up and no worries since then.

    Hey Dicko
I pulled cover off to see if that was the problem couple years ago. It wasn't.  Put torque wrench on it and it was plenty tight.  I was thinking about backing it off and retorqueing but decided to just leave it.

Jersey there is more to it than just taking a new one out of the box and chucking it on, many do that and it works ok, some do not and you hear of those, they say stuff along the lines of Harley junk etc, following a proper procedure will give good results, the latest comp that has all the issues it's predecessors had addressed (thanks mainly to the aftermarket people finding solutions that Harley then incorporated into their updated comps) works well if it is set up right to begin with, there is much written on the the subject if you are interested.

    OK
Thanks for that Grease Monkey.  Whenever I get one I will be doing it myself.  Will heed your advice and do plenty of research beforehand.  I read mine is one of the earlier ones that require the Rotor to be replaced as well.  That tells me something right there about design of the setup.  Apparently pre 2007 weren't that bad and they just got cheaper on the design and manufacturing from 2007 until they started putting the SE ones in everything.  What I read anyway.  I only just started looking and am in no rush.  I think Lockdown is getting to me.  After the photos of Bondi this weekend they can all get fucked and the Gov may as well end the Lockdown now.  Here is nothing like what the US went thru at the beginning of this Shit Show.  Serious lockdowns and streets empty in NY area where I am from.  Fucken China was locking people in their homes without question.  Can barely tell the difference in Sydney gaging by shops open, traffic on roads and all the cunts at the beach.  Was willing to do whatever it took to help stop this MFer but why should so many suffer while so many others just don't give a fuck.  I am one of the lucky ones that hasn't missed a paycheck.  Poor small businesses mostly small retail and restaurants going under every day.  I was saying wait until 70% but now just think fuck it.  Open up and let these poor people try and make a living again.  Yea it was a shit day at work and venting LOL

Jersey heres the goss , Rollies were the Australian distributor for Baker but that relationship fucked up so as far as l know there is no Australian distributor. My model FLHT is an 09 they were notorious for shit compensators through 2011 model year . To fix the problem you need to buy a good second hand or new Rotor from a 2012 or later Twin Cam. You will also need inner primary gasket , inner primary main shaft seal and outer primary gasket. And while you have the inner primary off replace the mainshaft inner primary bearing as they are shit as well. lf you havent got a factory manual get one you will need it for guidance and the torque values. On that note with the baker compensator they call to torque the compensator bolt to 175 foot pound where the factory comp was 145, clutch shaft nut is left hand thread and its torque is 70 foot pound . Also if you are not replacing your primary chain dont forget to mark the direction of the chain before removing it. Now as far as The Baker comp goes there are plenty of good US shops who ship to Australia and sometimes with the dollar excahange and freight cost its not a lot of difference between local and theres. The last thing is if you havent got the tools or knowledge take it to a good shop with the goodies you bought and get them to fit it

I bounce a lot of stuff off Chris at C&R Engineering in Revesby.  I built a 1974 basket sporty Chop a couple years ago and he knew where to go for everything I needed.  He actually had most of it laying around after doing this shit forever.  He had heaps of old spares I needed.  I'll heed your advice and ask him what he has been putting in bikes.  The noise out of mine is getting embarrassing at idle now.

Mate, I am 60 and deaf as a post.  Should prolly have hearing aids.  45 years of windnoise and a short stint of putting earbuds in to listen to music have fucked me.  Mrs and kids just shake their head when I say What you say?  Fuck em

Ha! I agree, won't talk to you, sounds like it could be painful ;)
(My reaction stems from having a couple of family who are actually in denial of their hearing loss). We can all be glad at the ease of conversation typing in a forum.
I ride with a lot of blokes who mention it's the wind noise that does it, I also work in a noisy environment- trying to protect what I have left.
Bit of hijacking of original thread there sorry.

I had mine replaced at 92,000 kms on my 08 flht.
    It was rooted.
The mechanic told me to listen for the clunk once you shut the motor off.
    Doesn’t clunck any more.
Now has 119,000 on the bike.
