Clutch hub mainshaft nut removal help needed

    Hey guys.

I'm following the service manual to remove primary chain and clutch assembly as a whole  - so I can get the inner primary off to change the rear belt. 2002 Softail.

Now the bike is in gear, but the clutch basket and rear sprocket spins freely and therefore the mainshaft nut can't be loosened?? I don't have the rear wheel on to lock the brake.

How do I lock up the rear drive sprocket so I can undo the clutch hub main shaft nut?

I have the primary chain locking tool in place, but that makes zero difference. When I try and loosen the sprocket nut the whole assembly just spins? I thought the trans being in 5 th gear would not allow this... Now I'm stuck.

    Any advice appreciated.
    Cheers

I've put it in 5th gear and used a C clamp on the rear brake pedal to lock the brake on.

Thanks fatty, but my complete rear end is off,  including the swingarm. So I can't apply the brake to hold the drive sprocket from spinning so I can remove the clutch mainshaft nut.

A rattle gun ( electric or air ) can do the job . but they don't always recommend . ( still it works. )

Thanks Krash, it's that or put the swingarm, rear wheel, brake and belt sprocket back on, right?

Even with the impact wrench, what do I use to hold the rear drive sprocket from turning?

Yeah, thanks... I know it's left hand thread,  it's just that there's got to be an easier way?

Looks like I'm going to have to put the swingarm and rear wheel back on just to get the inner primary off. Who would have thought changing a drive belt would be this hard.

Would have thought the initial impact from an impact gun/rattle gun would break the seal on the nut with the sheer shock of the impact.  Yes the rear drive sprocket will turn as well, but the impact should rattle the other nut loose first. albeit a split second earlier.  works on engine flywheels etc.  Cant see why it wouldn't work here?

Hint... Is there a reason you removed the clutch plates ?
