Gel cushion or air any ideas

    I’ve got an 8 hr ride coming up my seat I can handle for about 4 cheers

    Interesting issue. 
    First, I assume you won’t be riding for eight hours straight. I.e. I only rely on 200ks per tank (110 Fatbob)
    So at 110kph in SA for 8 hours that’s 4 stops for fuel, smoko, pies, beer, etc.  At 150kph or so it’s more stops.
    So, if you’ve not done this distance before I wouldn’t be spending big bucks cause your ass gets a break, some guys use a fluffy towel folded on the seat. It adds an air gap, absorbs vibration etc.

    Try an AirHawk.
    The seat on my Triumph was really uncomfortable despite cutting the padding to suit my ass and the addition of a sheepskin, so in the end I weakened and bought an AirHawk large cruiser thingy. I have taken all the padding out of the seat and have the AirHawk just sitting on the plastic pan and it i more comfortable than the original seat.

    Have never used one myself,but did buy and fit one to the trumpy for the wife, she loved it.

    why don't you just do the ride see how you go.
    I road a sportster for three days straight, far north QLD to Deep South coast NSW, stock seat, never ridden that bike before, & no fear of comfort .

    I have had an Airhawk for years, and yes the secret is not too much air as said earlier. I always used it for anything more than a one day ride.
    However ............. I have had the 2020 Ultra for 7 months now and in the 23,000 km I have done, I haven't needed the airhawk one time.  I took photos and measurements of the seat from the 2012 Ultra before I traded it ( I was going to do something to the new one, but didn't need to) and there doesn't appear to be any difference between the 2 seats. The only thing different with the 2020 is it has better suspension. So apart from suspension, one of the biggest factors in seat comfort comes down to the size and shape of your arse I think.

    the size of your arse does make a differance, I have lost 38 Kg since October, Just done 3500k's here and back from Tassie and left the airhawk home, no issues with discomfort at all, I also have a sundowner seat

    There are a number of factors that can affect comfort on our Harleys.
    Age of arse, and as soapie mentions size is a given
    regular usage on same motorbike seat, with setup as previously mentioned bars, height etc.
    Stopping for break every so often for watever, and take the weight off

    I'm an old cunt that is thinning down in age, which is why Ill keep with my Danny Grey seat, which has air gel, still works after 10 years.
    Not that I'm going anywhere at present.

    I always thought having extra padding in one’s arse would make things more comfortable but soapy suggests otherwise. You learn something every day....

     airhawk worked for me first ride with it, had to much air, after that was great, I found lambs wool was also pretty good

    Maybe buy some terry towelling  jocks ?  
    Buy two pairs and wear both.
    You could turn them inside out and wear them on the way home.
    Problem solved !

    I get off my bike now and you see the indents from my bones, my coccyx does not get sore since I lost my weight on long trips, the Sundowner is a great long distance seat,(my opinion)

    I have put the air hawk on my computer chair as it hurts sitting on it to long

    That is a  massive amount of weight to lose  Soapy.  We know how much you enjoy your barbeques so I will congragulate you on that effort.

    Bariatric Surgury, had my stomach sleeved back in October, I only eat a baseball size meal now (about 3 KFC wings)
    makes an 8KG brisket 4 meals and give most of it away to my crew at work or Daughter and grandkids

    on the up side, over 400Ks to the tank
