    Hi
Anyone had or having issues with SSB HVT-1 batteries ? Ive had 2x fail within a year the first went 11 months the second 10 months both wont put out more than 330cca and have resting voltages of 12.6v after being removed from charger for 24hrs. At which point it will not crank the bike until i put on charger and get battery upto 13.2volts then it will crank and fire but it cranks slow.

    bike is a 2014 stage 4 breakout with 26k
    bike charging volts is 14.1v
all cables and connectors tight and  free from contaminants
charger is ctek 8 stage mx5.0 few years old
when not in use battery is left on charger but cuts out after the scheduled 10 days at which point it goes into monitor mode and cuts back in as required.

Mate has same battery in std breakout and his went 13months then bike was slow to crank so he put new oem back after seeing my HVT's fail twice.

Touch wood! I installed one in my 2001 Night Train nearly 3 years ago. So far it's performed perfectly. Haven't used a battery tender or any thing and having 2 Harleys I don't get to ride it as much as I should. Sometimes it will sit for two weeks before I take it out for a blast and she still fires up almost instantly.

no good to read about your bad luck with SSB HTV-1.
I've had troubles with them, but just got another new one. the biggest problem I had with them was having the positive terminal break off, first time I've seen that happen with any battery, & been riding Harleys with out a break since late 1970's. but nothing is perfect. but I've got a carb bike, the EFI bit different in there need's, still EFI bikes get electric decompression start my motor needs to crank 230 pound no decomp valve ( too high in compression )

There are a few topics here if you search.
I tried one, tempted by the 450cca rating, that I now know is false .
It lasted a bit over a year before struggling.
    Lucky it was cheap.

I'm curious how you measured the current supplied is 330cca ?
I've been meaning to buy a current clamp meter to measure the actual starter current draw !

    Hey speedster

First failed Battery was tested using carbon pile battery tester by supplier.
2nd failed battery I tested with a clamp on Ampmeter.

Since the 2nd batt is a warranty replacement for the first batt they won't replace it again under warranty.

So what do I get now

    Hey Krash
I had the negative break on my first one then bought a new one cause it was just out of warranty then the warranty replacement failed 11 months later with low CCA they replaced that under warranty and now 10montha later the third one has low CCA.
When I crank all dash goes out motor barely turns over so wondering if ACR valves are engaging

acr's make slight clicking sound when activated
get the connectors out and put 12v across them
if you pull the plugs you should be able to hear them by listening at the spark plug holes
would be better with piston down in the cylinder a bit
less conclusive would be to disconnect them, maybe both or one by one , to see how much harder engine works to turn over, but would be a quick check

This is included in SSB warranty statement
"The warranty period is not renewed or extended as a result of a repair or replacement"

in the case powersport batteries thats 12 months from original purchase not from when a failed batt was replaced under warranty.
so im out of warranty :(

Hey Bodgie, if you have something that can talk to your ECU, you would probably see something in the software , that tells you if decomp valves, operating  ( but just guessing.
I had manual de comp valves in a high comp ( hi cranking pressure ) twin cam 95 inch carb, & when I used them the motor spun over real easy.

Mine are switched on in sert software and I reckon they are working cause if I leave batt off charger for a day then when I crank starter just clicks till I charge batt then it just turns motor over plus if I jump start it spins over fast and fires instantly.
    100% I got cactus battery that's 3x HVT-1 in a. Row won't make it 4
It's either genuine or a Deka Afterall the factory batt went 4 years and only got slow after I did the stage 4 towards the end of its 4th year

I think have to also remember, these new motors are huge!! like some are getting up there close to the size of Top Fuel Harley (188 c I d 190 ) some of them Top Fuel Harleys use a tank starter motor & large car battery's. another point if you had a kick starter you would be able to experience first hand, just how much work those little batteries do.
the stock battery worked hard on mine & when I got first SSB it spun motor over fired up quick. I could not kick start this baby, thats for sure!!

I purchased 2 of these HVT-1 batteries due to there CCA capacity
Both failed and were replaced under warranty and both have failed again in under 12 months. Clearly a fault with these batteries

Same, my last one lasted one season, (bike kept indoors and on tender always, ridden 3-4 times a week) and I bought another which has been ok the last 6 months. See how we go....

Just replaced mine with a Deka brand last month. Went to start one early morning to go to work and got nothing. Ended up being the negative terminal had snapped clean off. Suppose I can't complain as I got just under 4 years from it.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that there are Deka batteries and other Deka batteries.
The original Deka battery that came stock with my brand new FXST in 2008 lasted 9 years and was still working when I replaced it as I reckoned it was losing some of it's grunt. At the time the only Harley shop in the state was out of stock of batteries so I went to Battery World where I got a new Deka battery for my bike. It had no mention of Harley Davidson on it like the original battery did and right from the start it felt more gutless than the original. That battery is now struggling to fire up the bike and is not far from the ditch. Still, I suppose 6 years is not too bad.
Not sure why some of you guys are getting such shit life outa your batteries though.
Maybe you are using shit tenders?.
You only seem to need a very low amp trickle charge rather than a full on battery charger. I use 1 trickle charger and swap it between several bikes and seem to get generally great battery life.
