A weekend operation targeting motorcyle safety in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland has shown dangerous riding behaviour continues to be an issue, with police intercepting multiple riders.
Eleven Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) were issued to motorcyclists for crossing the double white lines, in most cases performing manoeuvres to overtake vehicles.
Operation SMER (Strategic Motorcycle Enforcement Response) also saw two riders detected travelling 150 kilometres in an 80 zone.
Officer in Charge of Nambour Road Policing Unit Senior Sergeant Shane Panaho said the behavior was especially disappointing in light of the high number of motorcycle fatalities on the states’ roads this year.
“The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is a popular place for riders, but what many fail to understand is that the winding roads can be extremely dangerous, especially travelling at high speed,” Senior Sergeant Panaho said.
“Overtaking vehicles across the double lines when you can’t clearly see oncoming traffic is also reckless and puts other road users’ lives at risk as well.”
Other results from the operation including cars and motorcycles intercepted:
four people detected exceeding the speed limit over 40 kilometres
11 exceeding the speed limit less than 40 kilometres
one overtaking when unsafe
two fail to keep left centre of road
two defective vehicles
two fail to attach plate
one use of high beam
one unregistered driving
one use of high beam
