I watched our current Attorney General today on TV defend the undefensabile....historical rape. Its interesting that the "anonymous" letter that lead to this public shaming goes unchallenged under our free ranging "Whistleblower" laws with little scrutiny or publicity/motives of the author. The police have indicated that they wont proceed with any investigation as the person involved has committed suicide and there is no evidence to pursue. This alledged "incident" happened 33yrs ago.   We are moving into a nation of trial by media.

Hello PB, in this mad conspiracy theory ridden world we live in now if an accusation is made, no matter how out there, it must be dealt with transparently or the mud sticks, more than it already has, PM is refusing an independent look at it, the shit storm will just increase.

Cheers Hilly. Surely if the complainant chose not to make either a statement or pursue the matter and the police chose not to prosecute then what can any independent inquiry hope to find.

after talking to investigators for 3 months and refusing to do a formal report, then email in a "I no longer wish to pursue the matter"
should have been the end of it, I would say he had either knocked her back of pissed her off, she was not sure of what she was leading into
Her family even commented she has embellished it a bit because of her illness"

sounds like the woman had a poor later life with illness, must have been terminal
then to commit suicide before a not nice (if there can be) death,
I personally, not a big fan of suicide, yet not knowing of her options, hard to make assumptions, euthanasia for the seriously ill with no chance of improvement or standard of life is a (political) option, (very touchy topic this one)

Not a fan of suicide?...yeah I get it...ok but for some “comes a time” “better to die young than that fade away” all I know is I ain’t going to a nursing home nor other institution.
Guess it depends what you’ve seen.
Get my shit in order and hopefully, I’m just another missing person or road statistic.
This case highlights what havoc you can create by dropping a few accusations before you go. Makes me think.

Remembering everything from 33yrs ago tells me he would be a genius. Lets not forget two things ..firstly this was a "allegation"( a claim or assertion that someone has done something illegal or wrong, typically one made without proof.) Lastly we have now as a society excepted that the accuser is a victim and we scream about justice for the victim yet we fail to accept the standards set out in the definition of the word "allegation"

What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"

there used to be a time where One is accused of a crime and here is the proof to back it up, now appears, the accusation is enough

this should be good, apparently it happened at a debate comp, it is a faulty towers skit, yes he did" "no he didn't"

Police had investigated this allegation and found no grounds for charging the accused . As has been pointed out, it is a big step from allegations  to charges being laid, and even a bigger step to sound prosecution of, and ultimately being guilty of charges laid.

If an independent inquiry is called on the basis of unsupported allegations, this places the police in an interesting position, do they go back and re-investigate limited evidence?  or do they stand by their investigation? both actions would be an admission their work was either incomplete and poorly executed, or seen as sticking their heels in and denying justice.
The person that made the original accusation had not provided enough substance to the accusation for it to move forward, and had also asked for the accusation to be dropped, sadly this person is not now with us to explain their choice of actions, it will only be guesswork now. I for one would not like to be facing court on charges based on hypothesis or what someone not there might have been thinking without supporting evidence.

This would also give the person authorizing the inquiry based on unsubstantiated accusations an ultimate power over police investigations, and a vote of no confidence in the police force.

Morrison said he supports the rule of law, and sees no exercise of executive power to undermine that. I agree with him.

On the second day after things went public, Morrison told us his wife asked him to treat this as if his own daughters
If this was his own daughter there would be a major inquiry into this
These governors of our country should be spotless with out reproach, clean as a cops Glock

We have to stop calling persons who make allegations "victims" The use of the term gives an immediate impression that a proven crime/event has been perpetrated on them. This is totally a misrepresentation of their circumstances, the crime/events are unproven and the burden of proof goes well beyond saying someone did something thankfully.

I there is to be an inquiry it needs to not be about the allegation, that has already been legally dealt with, it should be about the motives and moral behavior of the ABC who  following her death her family asked the ABC not to go public with her case, a request the national broadcaster appeared to initially respect and then ultimately disregard. Why did they think that this was such a important matter that they needed to betray their wishes and at least, smear a ministers reputation and name, as well as distract the government during a critical time leading out of Covid. Political interference or self serving click bait?

Most alleged sexual assault incidents have one alleged offender and one victim with no witnesses to the incident. When the incident is so old and the victim is dead, there is absolutely nothing to be gained by looking into it any further.

It’s now a political game, clearly demonstrated by the abc going ahead with the story even against the wishes of the family. Shame on the media and politicians making a game out of this

ABC Australian Broadcasting Commissariat. Anyone that thinks the ABC has absolutely no agenda on any given topic/event is in agreeance with their version of so called reporting. The days of the ABC only reporting facts in a monotone Australian/English accent is a ghost of the past. Their news reporting is bordering on commentary.
When Trump was on the election trail before the 2016 US elections we were in the US, the reporting we saw there gave even time and balanced reporting to both candidates, debates and policy speeches were regularly televised,, we come home and we not only don't see what is being televised in the US, but do see a distorted representation of events. Like the guy or hate him it is irrelevant to us as he was never our head of state.

The absurdity continues....the partner of Brittany Higgins ( the first public alledged rape matter) he is “angry and sad” that he and the alleged rape victim are having to pack up and leave Canberra “forever”, in a since deleted tweet. The truth is that he resigned and has taken up a different job in a different state, and she resigned from her job! Never ever let the facts get in the way of a good story.
