You know your hub is rooted when.....

...the outside diameter of the bearing slops about in it like a sausage in a doorway.
You can see marked in orange on the picture where the outside of the bearing has worn a trench on the hubs inside diameter. (first pic)
To make things worse it is not really repairable by turning the I.D of the hub larger and then putting a sleeve in there as there is only 2mm thickness between the orange lines in the second pic, not enough to be able to put a decent sleeve in.
Also in the second pic you can see damage inside the hub (yellow squiggle) that was caused by a major bearing failure approx 40,000klms ago.
It shits me that I just had a brand new tyre fitted, then checked the bearings as I was leaving the shop.
Got the shop to remove the tyre again, then got a double dose of the shits when I realised Harley Davidson never actually sold the hub as a spare part. You could only buy the whole wheel assembly, Hub, Spokes, Rim and all.
But it is no longer available.
No one in Aussie had a hub to suit this model. Only thing I could find was an aftermarket one on US ebay made by "V-Twin" parts and not sure where it is made.
Put the order in for it and hope the quality is ok, there is a lot riding on that hub when you think about it.

Fc. Sorry to hear mate. Saw an interesting Allen Millyard the other day. When welding up a crank case he cut thin strips off an old case and used it as filler wire with a tig on the repair. Perhaps you could get someone to tig in some metal then machine the hole for the bearing. May not need much if you go for a larger od.

    Cheers Steelo.
Had exactly the same problem with a Guzzi cast wheel once. The bike had been 2 up round Australia in the 80's taking all dirt side-roads (but not beaches) . Paid to get it machined out and sleeved, but it was never quite the same. Eventually the sleeve wore out and a Guzzi dealer told  me to cut strip out of a beer can and use that for another sleeve. I did try that but it was not a good fix.
Think I will take my chances with the "V-Twin" part and keep watching ebay etc to try and find a gennuine hub down the track. One will turn up sooner or later.
Just a bit pissed I can't get a spare from Harley. Sure it is a 2008 model but even Shovelhead hubs are still available.

What do you do for a day job steelo?   engineering ?  boilermaking ?   I like your enthusiasm but FC 's current issue could be life or death if he gets it wrong.
What sort of material is the hub FC?  Looks like aluminium ?  I would suggest you talk to an aluminium specialist but that might be hard to find on that little island where you live.
I have had  similar things repaired in the past with metal spray but never aluminium.
I deal with a company just around the corner who does aluminium metal spray .
I cannot for the life of me remember who they are called but when I do I will let you know.

Hi Beags, hub is some sort of alloy. Just poked it with a super strong rare earth magnet and no attraction there.
To make matters worse I can't find my "Alloy O meter", so not sure of the hubs make up. Just resigned to the fact that it is fucked and not worth repairing.
It is interesting that the V-Twin aftermarket hub comes complete with bearings installed and the spacer tube between them!
Wondering if one should do a pre-epmtive strike and change the bearings for decent Japanese ones before I even install that hub...when it gets here.
Go easy on Steelo too mate. His day job may be the benevolent moderator but I did see him at the hit mans picnic day barbeque recently.

Thanks BB, but my mind is made up.
In my opinion the hub is ruined and I will take my chances with the unknown aftermarket one and in the meantime try to remember to look out for an original second hand undamaged one.

Hi DJP, it is for a 2008FXST with 17 inch x 200mm wide wheel NON ABS 25mm axle.
The supplier of the aftermarket hub says it is compatible with the following list of non abs bikes. Not sure I trust the list though as I thought all bikes after about 2010 had ABS.

Important part details    Year    Make    Model    Submodel
without ABS    2017    Harley-Davidson    Dyna    Wide Glide FXDWG
without ABS    2016    Harley-Davidson    Dyna    Wide Glide FXDWG

FC - I think ABS is an option in the US (I image that is where your supplier is) so that is maybe why they have "without ABS"

I thought the vast majority of cast alloy HD parts ( wheels, hubs, heads etc), from that era, actually came out of a foundry in South Oz.
Which really pissed me off when I had to wait for a part to come from the USA once.

I’m not 100% on when ABS became standard but I can tell you my 2011 street bob doesn’t have it. As far as I am aware the hubs are the same for abs or not anyway, the bearing thickness is just smaller on the abs versions to allow room for the abs sensor to fit as well.

Message me your phone number FC and I’ll send some pictures through of what I have and you can see if they’re any good to you.

I originally bought as I was going to lace a 200mm rear up but I have changed my mind on that now.

Pedro, I know a lot of HD cast alloy mags did, not sure about that spoke wheel hub, but the 01 FXD TC I bought new had made in Italy on spoke wheels & looked same as that hub.
