Well at one stage it was BMW leading the charge and now Ducati are the first to offer adaptive cruise along with blind spot etc on some new bikes....the world is a changing place

    PB,

Have just finished reading this and then saw your comment. Very interesting technology. Always going to be the troglodytes that do not want to get anything new and I do also understand the misgivings some people may have handing control of their bike over to a computer. Personally I would not want to rely on it to get me out of troubles but in a light traffic situation on a freeway I can see it would be useful.

Back in the nineties I worked for BMW as a software programmer and test rider on their fuel injection systems and it was always interesting to talk to people about the relatively new technology coming into mainstream motorcycles and hear their reactions. Mostly something along the lines of "but I can pull my carby apart on the side of the road and repair it". Not too many carby bikes available new anymore...

    Cheers

Absolutely correct WW. I was in the bike industry prior to BMW bringing out ABS and the resistance and arguments we would have with people regarding their perception of their skill v a computer on a wet surface was interesting. I was at the release of the ABS Beemers in Phillip Island and they poured several bags of aggregate down the main straight and you had to come down at around 120kph and brake hard while going over it. Do you think my brain could override the years of self preservation in that moment....not a chance in hell. Once i trusted the system i have never so much as given it a second thought. And then they brought out lean sensitive ABS......the brain has returned to trusting ABS but not the lean sensitive side. After much prompting by my mates son i rode his sportbike and was amazed again at the tech allowing me to brake really hard upright and hold the pressure on while tipping in without the front locking or tucking . The tech is truly coming our way

My Ranger has adaptive cruise, seems to be a pretty decent system in a car, would have to suck it and see on a bike though, not sure about the brakes coming on when I maybe would of just gone around, might catch me off guard, I do love abs and the cruise on my bike though, I use cruise all the time now, one less thing to check.

I usually take the opportunity to ride with only my left hand on the bars and stretch out my right hand when i have cruise on so agree with you Hilly about the possibility of the brakes being activated by the system unexpectedly. Keen to try it out though

Have just read that the only drawback with the system is recognizing a fellow motorcyclist in front of you due to the small target area.

My car picks up bikes but it's a big radar compared to what a bike would have, I'm sure they will sort it out, the Chinese just pulled rocks off the moon on auto pilot, this shit should be a walk in the park :)

Which hardly matters given you’d either ride around the other motorcycle if safe and possible, or touch the brake, clutch or cruise controls to deactivate cc without fuss
