Fair dinkum the Bunch running some of our biggest companies leave a lot to be desired. Jetstar let go of 370 of their Ramp/Loading employees due to "Covid" [ I was 1 of them]. Now their 10 year plan has come to fruition with the Axing of over 2000 Qantas Loaders..."Covid". COVID my arse...This Company has been attacking workers rights for a long time. Covid allowed them to get away with it simply because the schedule in this period was only running at 20-30%. Hate seeing on the News its Covid Covid Covid...Just a perfect excuse. At the end of the day the Managers and senior Exec's will reward themselves with even BIGGER FATTER bonuses. Us blokes $25.00 an hour permanent...New lot about $25.00 casual. Lots of people think it's a well paying job??????? Try living on that wage and getting 30 hrs per week which is all our EBA entitled us to. You'd think this low wage guarantees your continued employment....Nope this lot will find a way to even go lower!!!!!!
Way back in the day had 9 years on Ramp with Ansett and I've missed that company every day of my life....You were not a cost, in their eyes you were an asset....Not nowadays!!!!
After 9 years at Ansett and 16 at Jetstar and at 58 years old getting on Seek and attaching this attaching that looking in a monitor and answering questions in a given amount of time.....FARK.
Venting over, time to get the bike out.

I hear you Fey but the reality is that for the most part it is true. Hospitality actually had their penalty rates REDUCED for weekend and public holidays in a effort to assist businesses remain open...and good old Labor never raised a whimper of protest, just like the toothless but very profitable unions are doing nothing but bleat and chest puff for your industry. Try getting a part time or full time gig in hospitality...not a chance! Everyone is now casual or salaried (slavery were your expected to perform a "reasonable" amount of overtime for your wage) Reality is that COVID has smashed every industry but airlines have been hit very hard with zero revenue.
As for Ansett although they may well have looked after their staff the following extract may explain their demise....Competition from Qantas and a succession of low-cost airlines (Impulse Airlines and Virgin Blue), top-heavy and substantially overpaid staff, an aging fleet, and grounding of the Boeing 767 fleet due to maintenance irregularities left Ansett seriously short of cash, losing $1.3 million a day.
Lesson learned from Qantas and Jetstar hence the reduction in workers. I am sympathetic Fey as i face a similar predicament after 15yrs with my employer, doesnt help either that they now get an $ incentive to employ a younger person! I wish you well Fey, upside could be more rides.

At the time of its demise ANSETT was owned by Air New Zealand who acquired it in Feb 2000. By Sept 2001 Air New Zealand was screwed. The NZ govt bailed out the mothership but cut ANSETT loose to the administrators. Also QANTAS, in competing with ANSETT, flew some routes at a loss as they were cashed up and could afford to run the struggling airline, ANSETT, into the ground in a price war.
But hey...lets just blame the overpaid Australian workers.

And then there was the Howard governments ANSETT ticket tax on all air tickets in Australia. But that's another story in it's self. Estimated to have made a profit of $260m the government refused to use that money to help pay out the former employee entitlements.
Do you reckon the CEO and board members of Air New Zealand missed out on their pay and bonuses for running both airlines into the ground?

The high wages and top heavy management were a part of the demise along with the other contributing factors mentioned at no stage was it suggested it was the sole reason.
You have misrepresented the Aust governments "ticket tax" as this was a "bond" for the $350mil they loaned the administrators to pay the entitlements along with the $150mil that Air NZ chipped in to stop ASSIC from looking at corporation breaches. Every worker got 96% of what was owed.
As for the CEO and board members of Air New Zealand missing out on their pay....who knows.

For many of us, the good Australian life we’ve been used to is gonna decline, no ifs or buts about that. Many jobs have had either no real wage growth or negative wage growth relative to inflation for numerous years. Manufacturing, mining and agriculture industries have all had hits too. Tourism has obviously taken a big hit. And now retail, hospitality and services, which is mainly what we do here now, are impacted by negative wage growth too. The Indonesian fella who predicted Australia would become the white trash of Asia wasn’t too wrong. Except it’s not white trash now but a multicultural blend of trash.

I’m still optimistic things might change. The current state of affairs with China might see many countries band together and start becoming more self sufficient but it will take government courage and assistance. And it’s a big adjustment to all of us if we want to buy non Chinese made stuff at a higher prices when our real wages are in decline

Of note, I worked for Ansett in their head office whilst putting myself thru uni. This was in the early-mid nineties and it was no surprise it folded. Some of the stuff I saw and experienced was unbelievable

rick I am touching up the paint around my house
I take a sample of the paint to bunning and its just luck if the tint is correct ( I have acutely given up on them )
Now I go to a paint shop here in Cairns / Smithfield and they are perfect on tint and price
