    Hi All,
I know this forum is about HD bikes, but I thought that the discussion on Solar power was very informative and I’m looking for some learned opinions, so here goes......

About to pull the trigger on a new A/C for my home in Perth, the current Evap just doesn’t cut the butter and nor does it provide heating in winter, even though it’s only 4 years old!

I was thinking of leaving the Evap in place for those days when it’s not that hot, because it is as cheap as chips to run, however I was quickly talked out of that, being as the Evap works almost opposite to A/C........

After starting out with a thought to go for 5 individual splits, then being told that Multi-Split was the way to go, I have more or less decided on a ducted system! Your thoughts please!

Then I need to select a brand! So I have narrowed them down to Panasonic vs Daikin vs Mitsubishi. The specific model numbers are:-
    Panasonic - S-125PE1R5B - 12.5 KW Ducted A/C
    Daikin - FDYAN125AV1 - 12.5 KW Ducted A/C
    Mitsubishi - FDUA125AVNXVF - 12.5 Kw Ducted A/C

As for pricing, there is only $187 difference between cheapest and most expensive.  The total cost, including removal of old Evap and fixing of roof etc is $10820.00 for the most expensive.

Thanks in advance for your opinions, apologies if anyone is pissed at me for bringing this up on our forum.

12.5kw is standard for most ducted systems now. Daikin ducted and splits we’ve had in 2 houses. In this house we have 8 outlets all individually zoned and controlled from closed and 10% increments up to 100% open. the installer tells me not as sophisticated as other brands (internet control etc) but good reliability.
We also had a large fairly new ducted evap unit. Rather than pull it out, Had the installer put 4 evap outlets in outside umr verandah.
Now refrig inside, evap outside where it doesn’t matter if open to elements.
    Price sounds about right.
Multi splits an expensive option although if I had my way again, I’d put a small split in master bedroom. Only 2 of us and couple dogs so doesn’t make sense to run large unit just to keep just one room cool or warm at night.
Only prob with ducted is control usually in central location away from bedroom and few have remote controls unlike the splits.

I have a Split 8kw for the kitchen/dining/computer and lounge rooms and 2 x 2kw in each of two bedrooms, main and guest
8kw split in the games room, 9x6M lined, insulated shed, 40C to 22 in 10 minutes

only the wife and I live here, we are either in the main rooms or in bed so that's all we need
the swampy that is ducted through the house has the winter guards on and vents covered as when hot here it is usually humid in the evenings and don't help with 45c for weeks on end

I can see a pattern forming here.  Do you live in SA ?
Have you contemplated opening a few windows to let the breeze in?
And have you contemplated toughening the fuck up?

Not unless they moved Perth out of WA in to SA! Like the man said, why be only tough when you can be cool and tough?

I like this idea! Going to see what that does to the installation price! Thanks mate!

Got a Daiken ducted system. To offset the cost of running it 13.2 kw solar system putting 80kw per day back into the grid over summer. The trick with ducted is to make sure the return is in the correct position to make sure that the temp is even if your not letting the whole house cool down.

Meet a bloke like you BB, lived in an iron house out of Cobar NSW, said only the new arrivals need AC.
Wollongong not too bad, I'm down coast more, if I open up front & rear door sea breeze cools it off, so don't need to use ac & no heater.

That's probably true, spent three years in Broken Hill.  Me, I loved the air con.  50 Celsius outside isn't much fun.  On one of my trips out there, in the car late January, had my dane in the back seat.  Stopped at 5pm in Wilcannia, it was 49 degrees.  Got her out, she walked two steps turned around looked at me like I was mad and got back into the car.  I felt sorry for her, as it was a little Fiesta she had been there since 5am.

Cobar, that's the fucken tropics.  They got trees to shelter under.
