    Hi

My bike (Crossbones) was hit by a car yesterday (her fault). The bike (and me) fell to the ground but seems still ridable. So far I don't see any frame damage. I never been to this situation, don't know much about motorcycle insurance repairs. my questions are,

    1. The fuel tank is scratched. Am I getting a new one or get just a paint touchup? Can the mechanics listed with the insurance company fix the original paint? if they can't, am I just getting a blank black tank (I will kill them if they do this)?
    2. The rear fender (black only) is scratched. Cost wise, is it going to be repainted the whole? or a brand new replacement? or just touch up?
    3. My pipe is stock header with a pair of slip ons. The slipons are both scratched. And the two pipes don't look parallel anymore. In this case am I getting a new full pipe? or they still just .... touch up? or straighten my current pipes?
    4. I wouldn't mind a write-off, what are the criteria to write one off?

My concern is, if they repair it like a car, all just touch up touch up etc, the value of my bike is gonna shrink by 50% i reckon.

    Anyone has any idea?

I am sure the mechanics assigned by the insurance company is a good one, I just don't know how insurance company deal with motorbike repair cost control etc.

The insurance company is AAMI Motorcycle.

    many thx
I was hit by a P plate lady who didn't give way to me. Man, all the roos and wombats give way to me!

Damn that sucks but glad you're ok

I would say scratched tank and fender is easily repaired but if there are dents those parts will require replacing.

You're in VIC? I would have thought you should have choice of repairer. I know a good one so PM me.

If it's just some paint an exhaust it's definitely not going to be a write-off. Even if they replace the tank and fender instead of repairing them.

You need to read your PDS. Everything will be outlined there. They are simple documents to read, have a dictionary close by.

Some policies have terms & conditions about age of bike, for eg if bike 0-2yrs old “brand new” parts are used. Otherwise anything can be sourced/undertaken.

No repairer can provide you with Harley colours, to fix you would need front & rear fender and tank all painted by repair shop.

    Take your time

after my prang a few years back, I asked my insurer if I could have the broken bits they said they don't want them so they were  happy for me to get them, I told the repairer that I can have them and when I went to get them, I had to ask for the SE slipons, he said "oh yeh, they are out the back, I have to find them"

    I said "Thanks"

    he had the same bike

I got all of my damaged parts back, most went in the bin but there was a few good spares and a bent fork tube to hang on the wall as a reminder.

The insurance guys didn't really have much to do with it, I never heard from them after the claim was lodged. Bike was repaired by HD dealership and I just dealt with them directly. When I went to pick up my bike they asked if I wanted the parts before they tossed them in the bin.

The reason some Dealers would not do repairs is, the insurance company try to get repairs done cheaper. so if your bike almost new, be firm!! tell the insurance as if they get outside repairer, the bike is not as new, a dealer would get new parts & probably with factory paint. So tell insurance as if they won't pay the dealers price, tell insurance to give you your money you payed for the bike new & they keep the bike, repair & fix or sell as is. I have done that in the past.

None of the bastards can be trusted, insurance companies will do the bare minimum to get the car/bike LOOKING fixed and I’m yet to meet a competent repairer, my last claim I just asked to be cash settled, got it repaired by folks I trusted, I lost out financially in the end but at least it was done how I wanted it done.

I must have been lucky when I T-boned a commodore who didn't give way,  I was with Swann, they paid all repairs and I got to keep the bits
then Shannons paid out (after assesment) when a crack whore pulled across the path of the wife's Porsche writing it off
my 2 week old Triton had hail damage (along with half the town) $10k and fixed within 3 weeks

must be the way I claim!!!

    thx all the reply.

Can HD still make a new fuel tank with 2008 crossbone paint? Or I just get a new tank and the local shop will paint "as per" HD design?

Could check for "new old stock" on the X Bones tank.  Would cost about one third of the value of the bike I reckon.  Easier to have a decent painter do the job, doesn't look that difficult for a custom painter.

just the same tank as any other 2008 Softail with the 200 rear. There was a "spare" Crossbones tank floating around in Perth where the original buyer put a complete GENUINE HD Numbered Custom paint set at $5K or some shit.  (Perth was BOOMING in 2008).

I had the front guard three years ago but long since sold it thru this forum to a dude in the east. His dad on a round Australia caravanning trip collected it from me at the time

It most likely found it's way onto a bingled Softail standard since then but I will ask around.

Sorry mate just saw that this thread is Re an "Insurance job".

You SHOULD get new parts but they will take MONTHS to come from the US

I fixed my own CVO Springer 3 years ago after a bingle with an Indian F-wit driver.

I fixed it myself , saved my no claims and all the bullshit. Long story really long since gone into on the forum here.

At the time Frasers , who were being truthful , told me it would be 6+ months MINIMUM until all the parts were sourced in the US and sea-freighted

I am now a "Springer expert" probably the only one in Perth WA haha...

    2. cam cover
    3. two engine top covers
    4. primary cover

Ok I’ll say this on painting these, I worked in a shop for a bit and they’d get constant requests to do just this, it’s a pain in the ass, they need to be VERY throughly degreased, the smallest spot of anything anywhere will stuff up the paint, keep in mind the alloy covers seem to be a little porous so getting it all out is a hell of a job.

Considering the man hours needed it may be cheaper to just buy clack covers from Harley, last trans cover I bought was only about $400
