Can't remove the left side allen bolts in the manifold. I've removed top motor mount and horn for access but though some of my allen keys fit, I can't get enough room for a full 1/6 turn. Time for beer.

Ball end key or the Harley tool, can cut a bit off the key, put it in the bolt, get a spanner on that, lots of ways to skin this cat.

In the absence of a vice and workbench, I'll go buy a couple of g-clamps and a hacksaw tomorrow.

I figured a short reach allen key might allow more movement but between all the tool shops in town there are precisely one set aaand they're metric.

can you sacrifice enough off the long end of a key the fits to be able to get a spanner on?

    That's tomorrow's plan.

thats exactly what I did with the 1/4 " spanner and one of the small allen bits that you get in the mini socket sets, fiddly but did the trick
tip - put a bit of tape round the allen bit so its an interference fit in the spanner ring end so it doesnt fall out

They do, looks like this, must admit it would be handy but I don't have one, what I do have is everything already mentioned and you can borrow what you need if you want just sing out and bring it back when you are done, offers there, up to you.

Cheers GM, I like to buy tools rather than borrow in case I need them again. ATM I have no vise, workbench or hacksaw. I'll buy a hacksaw this morning. The Harley tool looks handy, I'll chase one of those up.

That would do the job magnum.
I was going to suggest to smokey to make something similar with a couple of spare  Allen keys but it would be difficult without a vice.
Let us know how you go smokey.

    The manifold is out.

Reinstall can wait until after lunch.

So.... was it a shortened Allen Key with ring spanner on the end?

No, couldn't cut the bastards, damn my penchant for quality tools.

I had a stubby ratchet screwdriver with 1/4" hex socket that had half a dozen bits. One was 1/4" hex on one end and 6mm hex on the other, so had enough on the 1/4" end to put it into the allen bolt and still have enough sticking out to put a 1/4" spanner onto.

Tight as a mf they were, too. All cleaned up now, got saddled with two grandkids the last few days so work is going a little slow. Shit, almost forgot, today's the day they get fed.

Cheers, haven't any Vaseline, got sewing machine oil, engine oil, moly grease or sex lube. I'm thinking the moly grease.

Finger tighten everything in place then get the breather bolts torqued to spec first, then backing plate to manifold then manifold clamps.
    Did the original IAC work?

The breather bolts will move the manifold.
Follow the manual, position manifold, seals, clamps (finger tight), install air cleaner system then torque manifold clamps.

I flagged the IAC first for the problems because I'd had similar issues with the IACV on my old Triumph, cleaned it out a couple of times with little result, bought a new one, realised the rear screw removal was beyond my tools and that the manifold would have to come out anyway. There was a lot of crap built up in there so I'll fit the new one anyway.

The front intake seal had a section with a fine dirt coating where it shouldn't have been, so I'm taking that as a leak.

Presumably once the manifold bolts are torqued down (and there's no way in hell a torque wrench is going to be usable, so it'll be a guess), the air cleaner backplate can be removed carefully if necessary?

If I have to reattach everything with the backplate in place, I'll need the hands of an asian hooker to get in there.

yes Smokey its a fiddly job, do a trial run and see how you go
if you take backing plate of the manifold will drop a little, then you put backing plate back on and it moves manifold a little again

the clamps dont lock it in lets say, it can move on rubber

thats why you see so many with intake leaks over all the internet sites, no codes but just enough to throw idle out

it might take  a couple of goes for you to get seal right
