As previous 883 owner, I offer two options on "noise department"
    Cheap one:
04-18 Harley Sportster XL 1200 Radiant Cycles Shorty GP Exhaust Slip-ons BLACK.
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/04-18-Harley-Sportster-XL-1200-Radiant-Cycles-Shorty-GP-Exhaust-Slip-ons-BLACK-/173375873087
It cost AUD$170 and AUD$46 to ship.

    Loudest one (full exhaust tho):
V&H Sideshot. I had it before. I tested it, 120db in volume while my dyna is only 117db, which is the same as the helicopter level. No big twin was louder than me. I silence all of them. Nailed.

i thought the 1200 & 883 were the same physical size and it is just the bore size bigger on the 1200's that's different?

All of the 1200's I rode were definitely bigger - beautiful to ride, but bigger than I needed.

Sorry mate but the 883 and 1200 use the exact same sportster frame. The only main differences in them are the cylinder bore and gearing which of course you can’t tell from looking or sitting on it.

Different variants of sportsters have other different parts like wheels, mid/forward controls and handlebars. Handlebars are one of the things that can be changed over to ease commuting and lane splitting thru traffic

I understand that, but I was buying second hand also... so had to work within the means of what was available to me for a whole bunch of reasons.  The 1200's I rode were all bigger, but one was a Custom, another had been worked to death with bolt-ons and the 3rd one was my Brother-in-laws bike which had been changed a lot from factory - like I said, the ones I rode were bigger than the 883 I bought. I'm also of the mindset that sometimes less is more - what I ended up buying was a ridiculously good deal, extremely low km's (the bike had barely been run in), at a cost about $2k less than I could find anywhere else.  The bike is pristine - I'd be a mug if I lost a dollar on it in the first couple of years of ownership.
In saying all of that, I also needed mileage to at least be reasonable, and from what I have read (given, the opinions on the internet need to be taken with a grain of salt), I was going to end up with better mileage on the 883 due to the smaller displacement.  This has yet to be proven... I've done 300km and filled the tank twice.  That is not exactly fuel efficiency even for a smaller 883 engine.  I'd get nearly 100km more out of a tank on my old bike and at a cost of only about $1/2 more per fill.

Everyone I speak to says I'd be mad to get the 883 over the 1200, but with what I saved in buying the bike, I could easily get the 1200kit and still be better off... but I want to see if this is the bike for me first, hence the desire for slip-on's instead of a full exhaust.

I've found a set of Cobra 3" Slash Cuts... anyone had experience with these?  Price is not exactly low, so looking to see if anyone has them and can vouch for their quality in Aus?
Cheers to all the feedback so far, much appreciated.

Coming in late here but need to offer a challenge to the Screaming Eagle critics. I think that the SE slip ons are just popular to bash, even the dealers talk them down. I ended up with them on my Iron (another 883) sort of by accident - won them in a giveaway competition! I put them on because they were black and have not regretted it since. They are not as loud as others, but they have a really nice note to them and don’t piss off the neighbours. The bike sounds like a Harley should but I am not shitting myself every time I see a cop, worrying about being pulled over. The performance of the slip ons is really good, as they have some baffling, and hence back pressure, improving mind range. Far better performance than V&H short shots when I have ridden with mates who have them. So, don’t be put off by the SE critics. If you can find a set then they will suit your needs. TC

Agree re the SE pipes. I put a set of SE Street Cannon Slip on's on my Springer replacing a set of V&H Big Radius. Far better overall sound and certainly better mid range. Also can find them second hand on Gumtree, Facebook marketplace or Ebay.

It's been really hard to choose something, being new to Harley I take advice as it's given... so far the Harley mechanics I have spoken to have all been trying to push me toward a full system (possibly due to the possible opportunity to maybe get install out of me also, but that's business and that's OK), and most of them to Short Shots.  I know they are loud, but just not for me at this point in time.
I'm probably going to get the V&H slip ons as I can get them (availability on most things at the moment isn't easy).  No doubt I will be happy with whatever I get, as it's gotta be better than stock.

Thank you to everyone for your input and help.  I really appreciate it.  great little forum you've got going here.
