has it been sitting a while ? ... i bought an FJR that hadnt been ridden for a while and that used to get real sticky going up through  1st to 3rd.
also my mate dropped his harley .. bent the shift linkage and had a similar problem.

Hard to say, without trying it. but lube all gear linkage points, buy some gear box oil, take bike for a ride to warm up old oil. then drain gear box oil & replace. if still no different check clutch adjustment.
    good luck

What sort of bike are you used to mate? I  have a 2002 fatty and i remember when I  bought it I  thought the same thing.
Check all the  obvious things KK  just mentioned and  give the bike a service.
You will get used to it.
I have owned bikes you could flick up with your big toe.  I need to use my whole foot on the Harley.

Check the shift linkages I hand the same issues with a softail, the gear lever binding in the bush pulled it apart and lubed good as new

Thats tragic... Does not even get off the ground as far as a good comeback is concerned.
Its a Harley.... and if its your first Harley, then they are way heavier to shift than a girly blouse Jappa that just needs a puff of wind.

If its REALLY hard to shift then check the things the other chaps mentioned.  Oftn a drop on the left side will result in the shifting being stiff - not hard to fix though.
