Torque Cam Recommendation

    Gidday all ,

Probably been asked a thousand times but looking for a Torque Cam Recommendation … I currently have a 2017 Road Glide Special that had the full Stage 4 Screaming Eagle 107 to 114 set up done to it back at the end of 2017 , 515 S.E. Power Cam and had the first Generation Oil Pump upgrade … running Freedom 2 into 1 Turnouts pipes … Currently getting 129 HP and 119 Torque .

Been nearly 3 years since I purchased it and have not had any real issue`s with it , in fact it is a Screamer when you give it a big handful that's for sure , but outside of the once in a Blue Moon Drag Strip visit and of course back road racing with the mates the reality is that the majority of the time the Power Cam is being wasted so to speak … I`m a pretty big guy at 145 Kg`s and also double the wife more often than not and am looking for more of that low to middle range grunt .

While it is down I will look at upgrading the Oil Pump and Cam Chest as already mentioned I only have the first generation upgraded Harley pump … Leaning towards the S&S Pump and Cam Chest set up ... also as mentioned I haven`t had any real issue`s with it but I figure while it is pulled down , might as well get everything done instead of going back in at a later time … The only possible issue was a recent gearbox oil level check and it was down a little , don`t know if it was Oil Transfer problems as the bike has not missed a beat in 3 years … but I figure for peace of mind might as well get it all done now and won`t have to worry in the future .

Will also have one of those inner primary vents installed , again just to be sure … so apart from Cam Recommendations would there be anything else people would do while it is pulled down .

    Alternatively call alpha performance engines(Facebook).
They have a mass of experience in upgrading M8s.
    Call Ben Murphy.

I haven't dealt with Alpha Performance but that's who I'm going to for a cam for my M8. Check them out on facebook, they post dyno results for every cam they install, they don't hide anything, so you can get a good idea of what you can expect ahead of time.

Thanks for the reply guys … am definitely ringing around to see what dealerships and aftermarket shops are saying … just wanted to try here first to get real peoples real world experiences .

As mentioned in original post my days of sitting in the higher rev range to get the most benefit from the Power Cam are more or less behind me these days , although every now and again the beast from within wants to come out and play , but I have him mainly under control these days , Lol .

With the Cams mentioned and there's a lot to choose from when getting into this type of decision , I am looking for the Torque Cam with the Longest duration … hopefully I have said that correctly … as in coming in pretty much straight away off idle or at the very least very close to the 2000 Rev Range and being a nice pull as far as possible up the Rev range , hopefully up to 4.5 or 5 Thousand revs … some of these Cams come in at 2.5 thousand revs and top out at 3.5 thousand revs … no where near long enough of a peak rev range as far as I am concerned .

Of course things like Throttle Bodies and Pipes make a huge difference to the equation … I know the shorter 2 into 1 Freedom Turnouts are not the best for a perfect tune but as I have stretched bags with NO cut outs a longer pipe is not an option .

I`ve also had a couple of shops say they are having good results with the standard 55 mil throttle body which is a bit of a bummer as I have the 64 mil upgrade Throttle with the bigger injectors as well .

Anyhow as stated thanks for the reply`s and if anyone wants to chime in on their ideas I am always up for an education … Cheers all .

Also has to do with what sort of pistons you have. In my build I did on my last Streetglide I had all the bits except for the pistons. I asked the builder to use 10 to 1 comp which would've worked well with the 585 cams I had. When i had the bike dynoed it had 135fpt and 115hp. It sounded like it was going to detonate everytime I started it. Fred at ProCycle did the dyno so I rang him to ask his opinion what was going on. He said I had way to much cylinder pressure which was causing the nasty starting issue. He said there was no way they were 10 to 1 comp but more like 11 or 11.5 to 1. Long story short he changed the cams out to Fueling 594's which dropped the cylinder pressure down from 230 to 215 and evened out the torque and hp figures to 126 and 125.

TJU, there is not a lot in it with the torque cams, for sure call Murph, good bloke, knows his shit.
The latest Harley pump seems to have quietened the sumping talk a bit, I've not been following it real close of late cause I don't have an M8 and life is too short, the transfer problem is an easy fix, Maddo Senior nutted that out awhile ago, look it up if you are interested, the chart below is in a 107 but your 114 is the same crank so just a lift across the board would be close.
Piston oilers have been known to come loose, you are not torn down to that level but if you do....

Hi Guys , thanks for the reply's …

Steve L … yeah definitely makes a difference like you say which Piston setup one is running … mine has the Factory 107 to 114 Stage 4 setup with the High Compression pistons , I believe they are 11.3 to 1 … or possibly 11.5 to 1 … possibly someone can confirm that for me … How`s Fred these days , haven`t been down there since I moved out West and when he stopped opening up on Saturday mornings .

Grease Monkey … It`s an interesting at how many choices there are … looking at the Woods .. Andrews .. Fuelling Reaper .. and S & S Cams .. should be able to get a decent Cam out of that lot … I think sometimes the choice can get confusing when different shops , whether they are Dealerships or Non-Dealerships recommend different setups … for example I have one shop saying to piss the 64 mil throttle body off and put the Stock Plastic 55 mil throttle body back on , although that particular shop also said if the finances were there to go with the Screaming Eagle Alloy manifold and match it to the 55 mil stock throttle assembly   … while another shop is saying that`s crap , leave the bigger body on … plus of course if I went back to the 55 then  that would mean I would have the Expensive 64 mil item sitting on the shelf gathering dust … Decisions Decisions  .

Was also looking at upgrading to the S & S or Fuelling Oil Pump and Cam Chest but am considering just upgrading to the 2020 Harley Oil Pump that so I have been told Can be retro fitted to the 2017 Cam Chest … Save about a Thousand Bucks … but are they Ok long term … I have the first upgraded pump from 2017 and haven`t had any issue`s , so one would think the 2020 upgraded pump should be better again .

Thanks all , Appreciate the feedback .
