Whats this machine bones?  It certainly looks a bit different but I dont mind that look.

I reckon it would grow on ya.

BB they were very limited production & expensive German built, the motor was large then but not by the New standards, I think they were heavy too,

I would have a K1 no problems.  An iconic bike.  But then, I once owned a CX500.  I would have one of them again too actually.  Here is a picture of me, albeit smaller, shorter and younger me, the bike in question and my girlfriend who just flew over to meet up with me in her vintage plane.  I gotta way with the women.

I am not sure what that guy in the background is doing to the plane, should have told him to fuck off...

    Quoting Retroman on 16 Jun 2020 07:58 AMedited: 16 Jun 2020 07:59 AM

CX500 , known in the UK as "the plastic maggot" way back then.

The first rendition was mechanically suspect to say the least ( very un-Honda at the time)

The later versions were bulletproof reliable for gazillions of miles , most CX 500 ended up as despatch riders mounts until death.

There were shops in London that worked on nothing else , keeping despatch riders mobile."Donor" bikes out the back !

Then came the more recent "café racer" wankfest ( IMO) that removed more CX500's from the roster of originals.

Frankly they were/are even UGLIER if that was possible..

We used to run them as hire bikes from the bike shop back in the day. Brand new out of the crate they got an oil change and that was about it. Bullet proof motor. As you mentioned sold shit loads to the bike couriers in Sydney. We would buy 20 at a time from Honda Australia and get a deal think they owed us around $800 each and sold them for $1499.

Munch Mammoth. They were powered by a NSU car engine, This shot gives a perspective of their size

Looks like they bought out a modern version a few years ago also

I’m sorry but the Ducati 999 and 749 bikes are works of art! Beautiful bikes! But then they do say ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’. I’m looking for a 999s after regretfully selling my 749s for a camper trailer a couple of years back ??

Picasso's weeping woman is a work of art too.
After the very pretty 916, 996 and 998 the 999 left a lot to be desired, alright if you don't look at the fairing from the front (although they did grow on me a bit with time). Like you said though, the eye of the beholder.
It was obvious that Ducati even realised they made a mistake, the 1098 styling was back similar to the previous models again, a fantastic looking bike.

Agree, can’t argue with that FC.

I’d offer at a distant 2nd and 3rd, these other Ducati abominations.

To be fair, the 999’s bad looks were amplified as it followed after the 996 ... which was a direct descendant of the sexy 916.

maybe I am just a weirdo but  the duke in the top photo, the one with the training wheels looks allright to me

Big improvement Speedster!! & you don't need a hood to cover up that old VW motor!

Cooling it properly wouldn't have been easy. Probably more power than the original VW though.

That's true, but the original VW motor was also air cooled, could also use the oil cooled dresser heads.would be interesting to see how it went & what gear box was used?
