Hi M8 softail owners, I am after some help please? I am looking at purchasing a softail standard and want to know whether I can get a detachable sissy bar I have to fit it. I need to know the width of the rear frame rails where the quick release hardware mounts, as well as the distance between centres of the quick release mounts on a softail. Note this is only for the ‘skinny’ rear tyre softail models such as the Street Bob, Slim and Lowrider. If anyone who has one of the new bikes can run a tape measure over it and send me the measurements it would be fantastic. Thanks, TC

I can’t help with your measurements but I went through the same thing on a M8 Breakout. All the measurements were the same on pre M8 models but the width was a whisker off and the mounting hardware was not interchangeable. I guess they did this so you had to buy OEM and pay through the nose. I started to make one but soon gave up. Also looked at Chinese? ones but they could not guarantee it would fit and no returns.

Hi Wello, the sissy bar I have is off my Sportster. I really like the style of it, but the softail one in similar style is bolt on only, not detachable. Hence I thought if I could find out the measurements, maybe it is tweakable to work? I have googled around for the measurements but no luck finding anything regarding width and distance between docking points.

Yeah, I am sure they make things different enough from model to model so you have to keep purchasing from the Big Book That Will Send You Broke....

when i put mine on the bike i have to kind of push it together to make it line up to the bike .. its only about 5mm or so.. but other than that it fits pretty good .. its hard to get a measurement between the actual bike attatchment .. but if i could fine a frikin tape measure i could take off the siisy bar and measure that ; /

Ok .. from front to back centres = 180mm   and from side to side centres = 312mm - but i have to squeze it in about 10 mm to get it to fit on  so lets say the width on the bike is around 300mm give or take

I had to do something similar when I was fitting a rack to my bike.
The only way I could get an accurate size on the width was to use a piece of fencing wire and use it as callipers.
If youre careful and double and triple check it on the tape measure you should be right.
