Compliance for rego.

It seems there is a cut off date where, if a bike has a build date before this date then a compliance plate is not needed for registration EVEN if the bike has been privately imported from overseas.
Anybody know for sure what this date is?.
I called the local state registry twice today and no-one could tell me. Was told someone would call me back but it didn't happen.
Was also told to ring the national place in Canberra who deals with compliance issues as it is a federal law. No one was at work there because of the flamin virus.

Thanks Keith, don't mean to sound pedantic but have a suspicion there is a month involved as well.
    Do you know what month?.

Not aware of a month ? 1989 on the comp plate is my interpretation, never tested it, can do a bit of digging.

There is no comp plate, bike is an import with build date 05/89.
Will ring the local registry again tomorrow. Can't for the life of me understand how they do not know the rules.

Knowing that sort of thing doesn't make them any money. Ask them about costs and penalty fines and they'll have answers at their fingertips.

    Gidday Guys ,

Curious about this thread … does the cut off year change every few years … I bought a 76 Super Glide back in the mid to late 80 `s from U.S. Cycles up here in Qld .

At the time it was unregistered and had no Compliance Plate but U.S Cycles got it registered and told me the cut off date was Mid 76 to late 76 and mine was a early 76 build and was how they got it registered .

Not sure if they had a friend in the Rego Dept or did a swifty but I did sell it sometime later and had no issue changing rego ownership .

    Thanks for any reply`s

    Tim .

After talking with the big cheese in the rego department the other day, he told me that once a bike has been registered in Australia then it can be registered again whether the rego is current or has run out since then.
