Dyna 103 Stage II cam question

    Hi
    I enquired stealer last week about cam upgrade. They recommend 259 cam but with pushrod upgrade that total $1600. 

    Is there cheaper option? without pushrod replacement? 

    I don't like 259 cam's number after all. Can I use 255 cam instead? Does 255 cam support 2016 Dyna 103? what about push rod?

    I also looked 583 easy start cam from S&S. Does it need pushrod or cam plate upgrade with it?

    Mate, have 255 cams bought from PB  a few years ago now, can have if you want for what I paid PB, 100 bucks if that's any help?
    Pauly didn't do many K's on them, did you Pauly? 
    Anyway, they look good to me, never used them as I went with 204's. A 'spot' is a good start for saving on upgrade, so can spend more money on other stuff.

    I have a 103 in my Softail when I enquired about cam upgrade the SE 211 cams were suggested. 

    Copy and pasted - 
    SE-211 Midrange TQ Cams. This camshaft works great with 103" and larger engines with free-flowing intake and exhaust. This bolt-in camshaft works well with stock heads and highcompression pistons. It increases midrange torque and top-end power. For race application only.

    Lift @ Valve (intake/exhaust): .508"/.508"
    Duration @ .053 (intake/exhaust): 248°/256°
    Timing @.053 : Intake: 23° BTDC/45° ABDC
    Timing @.053 : Exhaust: 59° BBDC/17° ATDC
    TDC Lift @ Valve (intake/exhaust): 0.203"/.170"
    Note
    Dyna 06-17, Softail 07-17, Touring 07-16

    I found myself only cruise around 2400 rpm something, never go over 3000. 255 's dyna chart looks really ok for me. 259 recommended by stealer are mid-high range cam. I never rev 5k for commute.

    The cams came from a brand new 110cvo. They had done less than 500klm

    In  the dealers  total $1600 ,, does that included tune ?? , (dyno tune or downloaded map to suit  )…. Also have you got a tuning device of any sort for them to tune or download map  ???
    Re pushrod replacement , (ie installing adjustable pushrods),,,, More in parts , less in labour ,,,, or more in labour less in parts … about line ball .. Personally I would go replace with adjustable pushrods …

    re SE 255 cam ,,,, Getting a bit long in the tooth,, but a good cheap option that does the job ….. Where the old se 255 shines is in heavier bikes , ie touring models etc..
    As you have a Dyna ,, ie lighter bike ,,,, a good cheap option in the mix would be the SE 204 cam... Just my opinion ….

    1600 doesn't include dyno tune. 
    I mainly commute on this bike, 1000 ~ 2800 RPM would be 99.99% of the time I ride. The SE 259 doesn't make sense to me. 

    I will enquiry about 204 cam.

    You are correct, the SE 259 is not the Cam to choose as a bolt in.
    Lots of other choices out there.
    Does the dealer include new lifters ?
    Cyclerama 575 , Tman TQ 555 work well, or the more commonly available Andrews 57H , all should have adjustable push rods though.

    It all depends on what you want to achieve or what you don’t like about your current cam. Simply changing cams in not an upgrade, it’s just a change in the engines characteristics
    The 255 is a tourque cam, heaps of tourque from 2000rpm but the party’s pretty much over by 4500rpm. The 211 and 259 like more revs, might not start pulling till 3000rpm bit it’ll keep going to 5250rpm or so. 
    All depends what you’re after and why.

    Eh? Why bother if you don’t exceed 3000rpm, you’ll only be on the cam for 1000 rpm, waste of time and bucks. No fun at all if you don’t take it to at least 4500. 
    The S&S 583 has an even earlier intake closing than the 255. Its 18 degrees ABDC vs the 255s 25.

    Maybe keep the stock cam for your purposes which is pretty good for early revs riding

    Sell the harley and get a Lexus...  Your never taking it out of idle range.
    A new cam is going to do sweet FA if your riding style never even comes close to using it.  Stay stock.

    What's the needs or wants for aftermarket  cams if your riding style is low to mid RPM ? 
     stock cams and do a stage 1 might just be the go for your style of riding

    This is great advice.. I have a stage 1/stock wideglide that I use everywhere and belt it through the twisties and jail time speeds, it kinda does everything.
    I also have a softail with Mikuni flatslide, cams and a bunch of stuff, it’s not so nice for regular tootling about but pulls really hard when you cane it.

    Really depends on what you want to do

    Thx all. I have had my conclusion today that I don't need stage 2. Coz all I read people were talking about 3k rpm 4k rpm 5k rpm, I never even saw 3k rpm on my tacho.
