    Hi
ive been given some great advice on this forum so i thought i would try and return the favour

I came across a very interesting video regarding oil changes on Softails - in this case a Fatboy 2007
He calls his oil change a “purge “ oil change ( never heard of that at all)
Ive included a link to the video at the bottom of this page if it  doesn't work just do a search in You Tube - Delboy's Garage, Harley Softail Service #5, 'Full Purge' Oil Change.

    So
    1. Normally the oil is dumped by removing the crankcase oil bolt and oil filter .
    2. This essentially removes the oil from my oil tank
    3. Just doing step 1 the video I just watched suggests that this leaves about a litre of oil in the engine ??( hard to believe )
    4. So I watched it and after he removed the sump oil (and refilled the oil tank with fresh oil) ………..he removed the oil return line to the oil tank and connected another clear line (to the removed oil line) and cranked the motor over 10 revolutions to allow the old oil to get to the oil filter ( Note 20 revolutions of the motor allows the oil to cycle an entire loop of the engine it appears )
    5. He then changed the oil filter to a new one ( so it’s getting filed with new oil and not the old oil) .
    6. He then continued to cycle the engine over using the electric start ( Spark plug leads were disconnected) and each 10 revolutions he pumped out 100ml of old oil (black as) and he then topped up the oil tank . he did this about 10 times until he got clear oil coming out the oil return line .
    7. He then reconnected the oil return line to the oil tank on the bike and topped up the oil to the correct level
The entire process saw a full litre of oil pumped out using this method that would have otherwise left that oil in the crankcase
The engine takes 3.3 litres of oil so doing a “conventional “ oil change would have seen only 2.3 litres of oil changed not 3.3
The conventional oil change sees the 1 lire of old oil mixed in with the new 2.3 litres of oil (not really a fresh oil change is it )

    Does that sound correct ????

There's a No of videos on this site so happy reading

Yep - well worth it .

The one on the primary oil change and clutch adjustment is VERY interesting .

I rand a HD Dealer yesterday re " purging" the oil from the bike as opposed to a oil change .

That was met with " what's that " ( when i queried a tad further it was clear to me that he thought i was talking about a brake fluid change )

    cheers

I've been doing that for about 4 years, The only difference is after I do the filter change I run the bike till it comes out clean.

YA know - it makes me wonder sometimes WHY the dealership doesnt use these scavengers

Thanks for the link ………..same principle as what i reviewed but a tad easier though

Does this apply to M8s as well, or just Twin cams?

The reason(s) the dealarships don't purge the oil are simple.

    1) no money to be made in it for them where time=money. If they thought that they could make more $ then they'd all be doing it

    2) Those wee oil tank clips on Softails will break at some point , no dealer wants to be up for those !

    3) HD don't ask for it , never have

    4) Just change your oil yourself every 4,000 K's and don't worry about the "stuff left behind"

I do my own and all my mate's bike and have never felt the need for this.
