BACKFIRE/BURBLEING

    Folks
I had to recently remove the entire rear V&H muffler/header. I have not done this before. I reinstalled using a new genuine HD metal gasket that looked to be made from a compressed steel wool pad.

So the bike now backfires/burbles and sounds like shit.  Have I fucked up the re-install?  After I heard the results of my handiwork I re-tentioned the flange nuts but it seems now to be worse?

I assume air is getting in/out? Should I remove it all and try again?  Is there a better product than the stock HD  gasket?

    Cheers fella's.

Don’t know what bike it is but also check the O2 sensor and plug.

It may even be in the connection between the muffler and header, check clamp is tight

    So.
A:  Unless you can visually see a misaligned gasket then removal is best.
B:  Several folks make gaskets but they are all about the same, so Harley are as good as any.
c:  Dube check you used the correct gasket at the head end as there are two types.  Round and flat or round and cone shaped

Sorry folks - should have mentioned the bike. Its a stock 1995 EVO.  The gasket was a HD item (not sure if the correct one) - it was tapered/beveled on one side and square on the other. I fitted it with the taper facing out to mate with the header pipe.
My pipes are age related Vance & Hines so not sure if the shape of the mating edge shape of these makes any difference????

Hi - If 'cone' typ means one side beveled then yes. I put the square side in first with the bevel/tapered side facing out to contact the header pipe. I tightened it all up and since the burble did a re-tighten in case that fixed it. I did not.

is the gasket seated all the way down evenly in the port and all remnants of the old one removed?

sounds a bit like it may not be seated correctly and the header not sealing proper / square

I wondered that but was sure I got all the old one out. Perhaps I stuffed up the flush install of the new one. I guess given what you good folk have said I need to remove the system again and try the re-install again but double checking everything as I go.
Cheers fella's for the advise. The backfire has really been pissing me off. back to the hoist for me. Thanks one and all.
