    Great question
As we all come from regional areas and know the money small clubs make.

Great question Kiwi. there is a very long boring answer but short version is this...until 2018 they ran at a loss! They run a surplus in 2018 of $46mil and that was the result of several new TV etc deals. That number comes off the back of $500mil turnover so nearly 90% of turnover went on multi million dollar grants to the clubs, developing the women's league ( make your own opinion as to if that was politically motivated) and the good old admin fees of over $6mil and rising.
Lastly they sold out very cheaply with the TV RIGHTS etc for $1.8 bill till 2023 compared to $2.5bill till 2022 for AFL.
Nrl have the ability in the contract to negotiate the payment of players in the event like this to reduce the purse being drained. Successive poor management in NRL has not helped and old players and marquee ex politicians with zero experience should be considered on their talents not their name. Personal opinion

It is rather embarrassing that they want the government to step in and assist yet they are so highly rewarded for playing the game or administrating the game. No thought for many people working casually who now have zero shifts

Well put PB. I know everyone is the center of their own universe, but these guys asking for tax-payer assistance is comical.

I’m pissed that the NRL is run so badly they put their hand out like that. Taxpayer money is needed to help the elderly etc. Maybe NRL could show some good faith and get rid of 1/2 the administrators, media and diversity ‘experts’.
Don’t really care about playing in front of empty stadiums at this point. Heard they are chartering flights for teams that travel. I still don’t see the season not being suspended. Heard if suspended they could extend it into Oct/Nov with night games  - I’d support that.

I think we all would support that but unsure how that would impact on other sports scheduled for those dates already.

Not my problem PB - don’t watch any other sports bar bike racing and UFC!
Also means I’d be watching more games in the warmth, not winter!
