Since this thread seems to have turned into some sort of political come ideological sky news talk show I will ask this, if the boats stop coming how long before the lights go out? It's rhetorical, I know the answer.
Think about it, as an island nation we really need to be on the front line of alternative energy sources that don't rely on imported oil, it's a national security issue as currently we are vulnerable, very even.
Net Zero is a pipe dream but if the pursuit of it is dragging us towards energy self sustainability that is not reliant on bulk carriers they can dream all they like as far as I'm concerned.

In my simplistic view most of the problems come back to 8 billion - and counting - people eating the place alive :-)

Absolutely spot on. Too many humans but everyone wants to blame everything else.

forgive me if i have misinterperated, but may i ask how the current "alternative energy sources" are improving National security when China controls almost all aspects of rare earths & is at present weaponising it in trade war ( fair enough btw with the West's pathetic tariffs / sanctions) - so now we have critical supply shortages, especially with our insatiable appetite for a wind turbine / solar panel or two....
