Might go back to Red-line Transmission Fluid

Recently fitted a new trans cover & clutch cable assembly to the 96WG, used the dealers recommended HD trans fluid. Difficulty finding neutral, but of clunk going into gear also.
Will be dropping this fluid and using Red stuff - has the advantage of identifying any leak as from trany not engine.

this is a long shot WG,i did the same 6 months ago...new cable ect.assembled every thing correctly [ that i could see and i 've been on the tools for 45 yrs.],i had also inspected my clutch components and all was good, all adjustments were good [ by the book] but a bit harsh on first engagement, even when hot, and slight drag finding neutral cold.but i thought must be the way and continued on....but still not happy/convinced.when i returned home from burliegh heads i removed the trans cover and had a close look at the release cam plate and one of the ramp balls had "dropped " out of place, but not seen on assembly.refitted the ramp balls and reassembled and away we go,all good, ended up the mechanism was short on for full movement.now there is still a little clunk on cold first select, but can live with that,warm/hot is good.as i work on john deere machines i thought i'd try their trans fluid in the primary and i think this has made an improvement on the primary/clutch operation and the compensator  " noise" on starting is a lot quieter.drive line back lash seems tighter as well. i may be way of the mark ,but just my experience.cheers

Yeah, Bruce, glad you got it sorted.
I know what you mean about the 'balls & ramp' set up in the clutch. Could see it would be easy to let a ball slip out so I was very careful with that part of the assembly (checked it twice).
Getting the correct actuation, just seem to remember some trany fluids really made the difference.
