There was a minor oil leak on the bike and I traced it to the bottom of the primary case so I replaced the gasket today. (6 months later)
When I drained the oil I poured it into a jug and measured 750 ml. Its supposed to be 770 ml so that explains things.
It got me thinking but so I checked the gearbox level and forget how to do that. I am pretty sure you don't screw the dip stick in.
but is the bike supposed to be on the side stand or upright? I read the manual for a good 15 minutes and it doesn't say.
Its a plastic chrome dipstick and fukin hard to read at the best of times but on a smokey day it was nearly impossible .
    Its a 2002 fatboy.

While I was in there I checked the slack in the chain . it felt a bit loose so I measured it and got about 15mm slop.
The book said between 10mm to  16mm  (cold)  so I just left it.  There was no wear on the plastic slipper thing that I could see.
The bikes got nearly 50 km on it .

    From 2007 softail manual
    5 . Check lubricant level.
    a. Place motorcycle on jiffy stand.
    b. Wipe dipstick clean. Place dipstick inside fill hole.
Dipstick should rest on top thread of filler hole.
    Remove dipstick and check level.
    c. See Figure 1-31. Lubricant level should be at the
F(ULL) mark (1) on dipstick when removed.

Thanks fellas. Just checked the bike now and the fucker is still leaking. I noticed there was a bit of a lip on the case and I tried to file it flat with a file but it seemed like it had sort of work hardened itself so I just put it together anyway hoping the new gasket would take it up. .
Looks like I will be doing it again. Probably with a bead of silastic or something similar.

Maybe little pedantic here but, what about a dremel, (Handy little suckers to play with) and smooth the sucker down level.

Nah mate, think were all lazy lately.
Got a dremel little a while back and amazed wat I've done with the little sucker. Even have a pissy grinding wheel I've used for similar shit.
