Hi guys a mate has a 09 Custom Softail, he went to the shed 2 weeks ago and there was an electrical crackling noise coming from the bike. He hasnt been able to get any advice via local HD shops as to what it might be. (very fastidious with care and cleaning and mechanically apt) He did get a heavy drenching 2 weeks prior to this but says everthing is dry on it. (used a compressor to push water out after drench ride) Anyway prior to the Fish holes rally he started it and it kept stopping so decided not to go. He has ridden couple of k's to shop but thats it, doesnt want to break down anywhere on it. Noise is still coming from bike and he has no idea what it might be from. He was told there is a 9v battery that runs the remote for fob receive but no one has any info on where said 9v might be. Any advice appreciated. Cheers Burnzi

Hey Burnzi, good to hear your still around and kicking. Still have that lovely blue Evo and the Glide?
I too am curious as to the 9 volt battery, have heard it mentioned twice in a week on this forum, and no fucken idea where the little critter is?
Apologies as can't shed any light, some bright spark will tell us it's somewhere there , of course.

Hey Baloffski yeah still got both bikes but finances have them both sitting in the shed in need of various repair. Selling a car soon to help get them both on club reg and up and running. I found another post that mentions the 12v thing and am thinking this is the problem. Good to hear from you mate.

G'day Burnzi, for the life of me I can't think what could be audible and still invisible, I'm no auto sparky but usually if something is shorting then it either pops a fuse or gives off smoke/sparks, only thing that I can think of is main leads loose/corroded at one end or the other, hidden from view kinda thing?

We are assuming electrical, but what if its EFI related?  The pump in the tank can get issues with holes in the pipes etc that make all sorts of hissy noises; so pop the gas cap and have a good listen.
If its electrical then you shuld be able to track to sound to the rough place where its coming from.  Its very odd to have a short of any sort and not actually have a fuse blow.

maybe an over reaction but petrol fumes & possible spark ,not good, just sayin..

So I was just talking to my mate Silver and he said the noise is def coming from where the alarm chirps. He is going to take the back wheel off this weekend, remove the wheel splash guard and look at accessing/opening up the alarm "module" and see if he can see the problem or even the elusive 9v battery that no one knows of. Apparently its a baby hands fitment type of thing so thats the reason for the wheel off option. Will keep you all posted on the outcome. Appreciate your input everyone.

was going to suggest getting a length of 6 mm hose and inset it in places and see [ hear ] the sound or its location.

Yeah its a bloody chit to get to!  I had to reach mine to tap into the turn signals for my LED load resistors..

    Any success?

I know you said he's mechanically apt, but, I'm assuming he checked the battery terminals are tight?
