NSW Alpine Region

Am planning a road trip from Central Coast of NSW through the NSW (and possibly some of Vic) alpine region. Looking for any recommendations – places/roads that are must-see’s and places/roads to avoid (e.g. unsealed etc). Considering whether to do a loop or base ourselves somewhere down that way and do day trips out. We’ve got 9 days.
    Any tips appreciated.

The Vic and NSW alpine region is hard to beat for bike riding roads. You wont regret it. Lots of good pubs to stay at.

Hi Weedoman, I live an hour from Cooma and ride around the snowys a few times a year. Looks like you have time to see a far amount, so I'll put my to bobs worth in of my favorite roads,  if you want to include parts of the Vic alpine area. Be aware you will be doing some back tracking , (no big deal), as some of the roads loop around.... Google maps and a good paper map will sought you out ok..... All the roads are sealed , just take care riding up top in the mountain areas , as they are unmarked, and fucknuts in caravans like to be on your side of the road.....
The pics will give you an idea where you are, instead of giving endless names of towns etc ... Also it will depend on which direction you are coming into the alpine area, but you will get an good idea of the lay of the land....

    1. Cooma to Tumut.. My favorite road, outside the mountain areas. Some twistys , then opens up to the Alpine plains.

    2. Tumut to Jingellic... Rolling hills, not overly tight.

    3. Jingellic to Bright .. Following the Murray River ,, then onto Bright .. Other great roads to get to Bright, but you get the idea..

    4.  Bright to Cann River .. Bright to Bruthen, is the Vic Great Alpine Road.. Iconic Road..

    5.  Cann River to Jindabye.. Another great open plains road..

    6. Snowy Mountains Loop... Mostly mountains and tight,,, this is were you have to look out for the fucknut caravans etc .....

    7. This is a fucking must if you have time... It is in and out,,, best road surface in the snowys,,, a fucking race track......

Looks like Mark has you well sorted.
I’d add - Bright is a great place to stay for a night or too. The brewery in town is great but the pub is also good if that’s your thing. Beechworth Bakery in Beechworth is decent bakery food. There is also a good brewery there too.

Watch for a copper just outside Khancoban (heading Thredbo way).

Enjoy - some magic roads and scenery everywhere you will be going.

Based on your suggestions I've now put this one together:

Not sure which one we'll do, but either way it sounds like it will be great riding.

Four years ago we went that way down to Super bikes and it was 38DegC and the was late February. Two years ago it was similar to those temps, but it can also snow, you need to be prepared due to the elevation the weather changes pretty quick from day to day.

Enjoy! never gets too hot in the higher altitude places, but other towns you might travel through might be a lot hotter & humid. take for instance Tumbarumba & Wagga only about 90k apart but vastly different temps & humidity on same day. like Mark said watch out for caravans, some roads have not got a centreline, also if you see a heap of horse manure in middle of the road, your in Brumby country so keep a look out & keep off dirt roads as the Brumbys make deep pot holes!!
all the road I used were sealed some were a bit rough.
I live at Batemans Bay ( originally from Sydney ). also keep eye out for cops, sometimes can be lucky & never see any but lately I always see at least two & mobile speed camera. but on princes Hwy only two fixed speed cameras between Nowra & Bega ( about 280k )

if you are heading south from Talbingo there is Yarrangobilly Caves
dirt road in and dirt road out, different roads, when I went down it, they were rough, but if that is something you do, just go slow

We did the ride. Was great but talk about bad timing. Those fires were on our tail the whole way. Was incredible. If I could map out the route we took and the fires that followed us, you'd swear it was us lighting them!
Ended up cutting it short in Jindabyne. Charlotte's Pass Road was closed and there was talk of Cooma being cut off so we legged it. Riding in and out of Cooma was like riding into the end of the world.

    Unfinished business...

    Hi Weedoman,
Bad timing ,, that is an understatement ,,,, as you mentioned , you have unfinished business …. Not long after you started, the fires just spread and spread in the Alpine areas..
You probably dont want to hear this,, But a group of us are going up to Jingellic from the coast  this weekend,, and the weather forecast is perfect for riding ...... winners are grinners I supose ....
    Ride safe ,,, Cheers ...
