Was out for a run last Sunday and the bike started coughing and farting.
Checked the fuel gauge and it was reading full so I thought "fuck!  whats going on here?"
Luckily I wasn't too far from a servo and rolled down the hill and put in 18 litres so the fuel gauge is fucked.
How do you fix a fucked fuel gauge?  Its stuck on FULL

Hey BB, what model bike are you running?
It may be that the sender (float) or wiring is the issue - not the actual gauge. Owners workshop manual will tell you what the set-up is for your bike including electrical resistance required in the circuit to gauge to provide an empty & full indication.
Surely you must have been wondering why your bike recently achieved magnificent fuel economy!?
I zero one of my trip meters each time I refuel, got a good feel now for how many km's before I may need to top up - I trust the odometer more than fuel gauge.

its a 2002 fatboy.  I forget if the gauge used to  drop to empty when the ignition is off. Mine is stuck on full

Well 18.93 lt tank, so ya come close. I set my trip metre every fuel up. Then use that and guage

Never thought to use the trip meter. I might start doing that until I get around to fixing it.
I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction regarding gauge /float / sender / electics etc.

If you are saying that your gauge reads full with ignition off, then I would say it is the actual gauge that is at fault. Just to confirm that, disconnect all wires at gauge to see that it still reads full.

That's what I was thinking Wideglider.  How do you remove the fuel gauge to check the wires?
The gauge is the one on the left side of the fuel tank that looks like another fuel cap.

Should be able take the dash off tank, then just unplug the block, see what happens, on my 2011 fxst, there is a small plug which is for fuel gauge, and bigger block for rest of dash

I'm only going by the setup on my bike ('96WG), you should be able to disconnect at conector directly under the gauge under tank. Do you have an owners workshop/service manual?

Just had a look at the fuel gauge. The wire was lying on the front cylinder rocker cover.
I cable tied it to the fuel line and it seems to be working fine now. I love that sort of shit.
I will be using the trip meter but. Thanks for the tip.

Yes wire shorting on engine/earth would do it, glad you found issue BB.
I don't see how gauge would have read full with ignition off though, were you sure of this?

Not 100% mate. It was reading full when it ran out of fuel but. Will be going for a run tomorrow and will keep an eye on it and the trip meter.
