So..... I'm taking my sportster off the road for at least a year and I'm open to any suggestions on how I should store it
It will be sitting with the wheels off the ground.
She isn't having any work done, I can't afford rego for a while and I refuse to sell it. Looooove my sportster.

Hope not to miss lead any body BUT
I am in the same boat just can not justify the rego and have been away off and on for the last year.
All I have done is start her up every few months after 6 months went up and down the street.

Am I doing some thing wrong by my bike doing this ?

Yes and No.  Yes the regular run is good.  BUT it has to be a good long run to get everything up to normal operating temps.  So I would say a min of a 30 minute ride with 60mins being ideal.

Always keep tank full to brim, to reduce moisture, to allow to a no fuckaround start off ride, plus, just in case I have no $'s . Have bike always on lift, with battery tender and a large dog close by, that will want to play..

Why a motorbike is better than a woman BD

Motorcycles only need their fluids changed every 2,000 miles.
    Motorcycles' curves never sag.
U can ride at the desired speeds and change gears whenever u want.
    Motorcycles last longer.
    Motorcycles don't get pregnant.
You can ride a Motorcycles any time of the month.
    Motorcycles don't have parents.
Motorcycles don't whine unless something is really wrong.
You can kick your Motorcycle to wake it up.
You can share your Motorcycle with your friends.
If your Motorcycle makes too much noise, you can buy a muffler.
You only need to get a new chain or belt for your Motorcycle when the old one is _really_ worn.
If your Motorcycle smokes, you can do something about it.
Motorcycles don't care about how many other Motorcycles you have ridden.
When riding, you and your Motorcycle both arrive at the same time.
Motorcycles don't care about how many other Motorcycles you have.
Motorcycles don't mind if you look at other Motorcycles, or if you buy Motorcycle magazines.
New Motorcycles must be asked for, and if you don't want to pay for them, you don't get them.
If your Motorcycle goes flat, you can fix it.
If your Motorcycle is too loose, you can tighten it.
If your Motorcycle is too soft, you can get different shocks.
If your Motorcycle is misaligned, you don't have to discuss politics to correct it.
You can have a beer while riding your Motorcycle.
You can have any color Motorcycle and show it to your parents.
You don't have to be jealous of the guy that works on your Motorcycle.
You don't have to deal with priests or blood-tests to register your Motorcycle.
You don't have to convince your Motorcycle that you're a motorcyclist and that you think that Motorcycles are equals.
If you say bad things to your Motorcycles, you don't have to apologize before you can ride it again.
You can ride a Motorcycle as long as you want and it won't get sore.
Your parents don't remain in touch with your old Motorcycle after you dump it.
Motorcycles always feel like going for a ride.
Motorcycles don't insult you if you are a bad rider.
Your Motorcycle never wants a night out alone with the other Motorcycles.
Motorcycles don't care if you are late.
You don't have to take a shower before riding your Motorcycle.
It's always ok to use tie downs on your Motorcycle.
If your Motorcycle doesn't look good, you can paint it or get better parts.
You can't get diseases from a Motorcycle you don't know very well.
You and your best friend can ride your motorycle two-up and it won't complain.

Neale , if you have a battery tender keep it plugged in if you can. put cotton rag's up end of pipes cover whole bike with a cotton sheet or anything made of cotton, the more layers the better as this absorbs moisture . leave fuel and oil in only twelve months is nothing. good luck

    Sheesh.....
quoted and big mother fucken dog or huge marsupial, gone, just gone.
Neale, the suggestion that Krash mentions, is a bloody good idea, layers of cotton, and 1 year is fuckall for fluids.
    No stress.
Steelo's analogy of a motorcycle again a woman, is something I would say has never been shown to his near and dear, or he would probably not physically able to quote said diatribe..
Good luck with things bud, it can all get a little fucked up sometimes financially, mentally, but keep your ride for mental rehab later on, it works.

I was also told to change the oil as well, as depending on how old the oil is that can become slightly acidic and if it ends up being longer than 12 months can be an issue.

I have heard the same.  If your oil is newish then you should be fine, but old black oil with several thousand kms under its belt does pickup chit from the engine etc.  if swapping the oil then use a generic brand rather than the ‘special’ stuff as it’s only for storage use and the odd warmup once every several months.
12 months with no rego, might mean you have to RWC it and re register as well, so double check the costs as it could be cheaper to keep the rego going.

Yep and put a squirk done the plug holes as well, especially in the tropics. Stops the bores rusting and the ring pack sticking.
