Reading the live tweets from John Lyons, they're absolutely comical.
Sayin how scary it that AFP is trying to get into an ABC media harddrive.

No its not mate, a court signed off on it because its likely got evidence of a crime. Its really basic stuff in nearly every crime these days.

Saying any doc that says SECRET should not be included in the warrant?

Wtf? So you can broadcast classified material thats fine, but your trying to say AFP cant lawfully obtain these docs as evidence? Lol

Sayin its scary that AFP want draft stories,  because theres likely names, numbers etc (i.e evidence) in there...

    Again, no shit sherlock.

Going off about 9000 files etc, when in the end, after the process, he estimates they walked away with maybe 50?

Seems like everybody in the room, AFP, ABC exec, abc lawyers etc was super professional and courteous except this bloke live tweeting because he's stressing he or someone he knows is about to get busted.

Also theres some irony in crying about FREE MEDIA while the AFP happily lets him live tweet the whole search warrant.

its a tough one, because where do you draw the line? i do think there's some very concerning aspects to the extent of what their warrants allow them to do, but the same could be said for several laws/legislation that could easily be abused. i'm all for holding the government accountable where appropriate, but i'm also a believer in national security and that some secrets are best kept for the well being of our country - SOME things are classified for a reason. i don't agree with the domestic spying aspects as i highly value my privacy - and the old adage of 'if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about' is bullshit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing_to_hide_argument. there's better ways to ensure the safety of our citizens, like better immigration checks & policies, and the same for foreign nationals and corporations. not sure how much it helps either, given that one of the terrorists who attacked either sydney or melbourne (can't recall which incident specifically) was already on AFP/ASIO's radar and that didn't stop it...
i definitely think the journos should be held/hold themselves to a better standard of what they publish and what they don't. one of the US whistleblowers (bradley manning if i recall correctly) leaked a whole bunch of stuff, some that i feel should have seen the light of day, and some that shouldn't have and put a lot of peoples lives at risk for no real benefit to anybody. the journos who published that stuff should have been more stringent.

as Hilly said - we live in interesting times.

Its now been revealed that the AFP were aware who leaked the info and it was the shadow minister of defence, so they raid the press who reported it and then ERASE THE POLITICIAN'S texts from the reporters phone and computer! What is happening in Australia these days???

Labor pushed Turnbull to have it investigated just over a year ago.

This initiating issues in Afghanistan are likely to remain infathomable.
But as we’re just discussing the press and release of information, we’ll there are easily accessible laws to be observed by all.
So before a journalist decides to breach those laws they should have the intelligence to fathom what benefit will befall the public. Will lives be saved, will some despot be deposed?
In this case I see no benefit.
What irks me most is that often in the West, actions occurring under the extreme duress of war are subsequently analysed from positions of comfort and control.
I’m blessed, I’ve never been a military man (missed out on Vietnam by one month) so I’ve not faced immediate mass life threatening conflict. I’m certain there will be no inquisition on the side of I.S. etc into their actions.
So it really shits me that our guys, out helping other nations, life on the line, get so scrutinised.
I just don’t fucking get it.
