Engine Mounts

    Hi All,
Just after some general advice here and thoughts. Ive been reading about Dyna engine mounts and it seems there's a few options. I was just wondering what some of the pros and cons are and wondering why there's better aftermarket engine mounts then what Harley factory produce. Surely if the stock ones were that bad the factory would have fixed them in the later years.

Also is there a benefit of just replacing the front or the top or do you need to do all three to see any real benefit as the rear looks really painful to upgrade.

    Thanks Leachy

I think the front one  suffers more issues than the other ones because of damage from engine oil Leachy.
I have yet to do anything on mine as they are all still good.
Some other peeps will chime in about it I'm sure.

    Thanks Ken,
Nothing is wrong with mine either, but its an interesting thing that seems to get swapped out to something else and also the varying longevity that people seem to have.

I guess the trade off is better handling but higher vibrations with stiffer/stronger engine mounts.

Leachy there are a few options to improve the Dyna mounting, the Sputhe PosiTrac stabiliser system and the True-Track system both use Harley's original mounts and bolt on to limit the engines oscillation range to only front to rear, most sideways movement is eliminated, either system works, pick your poison, I think the Sputhe front mount looks nicer but the True-Track rear is a better unit.
Then there is the Predator VCS, it is a front only replacement engine mount with a built in stabiliser, you can't use it and the bolt on systems together in that location but can use it in conjunction with one of the rear stabilisers from either of the above.

You also need to check that the front engine mount is shimmed right and you engine is aligned, it's a bit of mucking about but can extend mount life if yours is off. There are methods to do both, Google should bring up a vid or two and some lengthy write ups.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice grease monkey. Is there advantage in just replacing the front mount as i can do that myself, the rear is a different story.
    Thanks for the info.

Leachy, like Grease Monkey said, the aftermarket engine + gear box, stabilisers , will make a noticeable difference you will notice as soon as you ride your bike after fitting one. and make it a lot safer too!! try lifting you dynamite so front and rear wheels off the ground. then remove the stock factory stabilisers and and just move motor around, will shock you how whole thing just moves around look at rear wheel when you do it. then after doing that you will understand a bit more, how the extra aftermarket stabiliser helps. as you will see what its like without side to side limiters hooked up. but stock stabilisers do not limit forward to rear movement.

Every bit helps mate, I lot do exactly that, however as Krash said, if you do both the result is astounding.

My '12 Widey is running a Predator front mount, it's a different design, not prone to breakage and has less vibration than a stocker.

A rear stabiliser is on my list also. Currently it wiggles the hips a little on sweepers at higher speeds, not much though if the tyre pressures are right.

Suspension has been upgraded and engine is close to stock.

Currently the bike has Progressive 940's on the rear and fork brace up front. I want to do the front shocks as well, but still undecided on which brand. Just make the bike the best it can be, and the engine movement seems a weak point.

The jury is out on the Predator, lots have experienced no improvement or more vibration.
The stock mounts have served me well, I put a true track on and this help keep bike stable over holes, bumps etc. don’t think it does much for performance

I’m running standard mounts with free spirits stabilisers front and rear.
I had a nasty vibration before and after install that was cured by tuning.

Its interesting to see the mixed results, however it does seem that everyone does experience some benefit to a degree of fitting any brand of stabilizer / linkage to the standard factory mounts. My bike if only fitted with a stage 1 and it has a pretty easy life but I think this is close to the top of the list to do.
Thanks for all the comments guys just interesting to see.
