The steel end of the plug thread is black. It is much cooler due to the alloy head it's screwed into sucking out the heat, so has dark deposits. The insulator is pretty much white. It looks fine. I think the engine ( if it's Ralph's 110) is going just fine. Remind me of the torque Ralph? My experience with breathers is varied like all the available set ups. The size of the passages is often too small for a higher output motor. Oil grade/type is often an issue especially with softail models.

Hey Lushy, Whats the better oil grade/type for Softails in your experience?

Lowering the level may help. Oil that does not foam in the tank is good. Lowering the level helps with that. On phone now with fat fingers. More later. Cheers

Softies can fool people into overfilling them, it's 23 degrees here right now, rode the bike last on Tuesday I think it was, pulled up in the shed, let it idle on the sidestand for two minutes, that seems forever for some people I know!!!! shut it off and checked the oil level, it was on full hot according to the dipsticks, that is me and the dipstick... humour although maybe true...anyway this is where it is sitting now after 3 days more or less, how many would look at that and think I might just top it up a little before I head out?

Yep even evo softails can full you on the oil level grows in the tank when hot
Bit like auto transmissions   I run a lower level in mine two half way ,
Between half and full and normally when hot it’s full or just over full mark
And that’s in the upright position not on side stand

My hose just goes open to the ground under the frame, no catch can, there is hardly any output from it. Not a single drop on the garage floor where I park

Hi all, I’ve got a 2013 switchback and I’m thinking of replacing the air cleaner and installing an external breather system.
Does anyone make an air cleaner system with an integrated external breather or do yo you have to buy them seperate and then modify the new air cleaner.

Pappa Smurf ... have a look at DK Customs website and check out a few of their videos, very informative ... you will most likely get a bit of negative feedback on this issue but for me it is pretty straight forward ... if you can stop all of that oily mist from going back into your motor then it has to be a good thing.

Remember the only reason USA Harley do it is because of the over restrictive EPA laws in the USA.

Yes, I’ve looked at DK and emailed them, waiting for a response. Always watch their Utube videos.

Many ways to do it, pick what air cleaner you want to use and we can dig up the best method for that set up.

My method is just use the two z hoses that come with the stock air filter, run them into bigger fuel or oil line, route them around the edge of the stock air box, join using a T fitting ( drill a hole in the stock box or cut it all out as I have done) and hose clamps then run that back and down over the transmission housing( use zip ties or a flexible clamp) down to just in front of the crossover pipe( bagger) and attach a crankcase breather. This looks inconspicuous. I use braided line just for looks. There are lots of ways without spending lots of bucks. I only did it to stop the oil and water mixture going back into the cylin der which reduces the amount of carbon on the piston, provides a cleaner burn and from what I have researched, reduces combustion chamber temps...

Thanks for the input daz666 I’ve thought about that but I’d be concerned about any oil at all so close to the rear wheel. We ride all year and in all conditions so oil near the rear wheel and wet roads don’t mix too well.

Mine vents the same as Daggs....done over 70k around Australia in every weather condition this brown land can throw at you and never had a single oil mist slide from the vents.

I understand and agree, however there has NEVER been any oil from the breather and I also ride year round

If you never see any oil coming from the external vent, is there really any need for them !
    Very curious !
I have a small filter on each vent, and I see some misting, (slight film on the pushrod tubes) but never any drops of oil.

The filter does just that, any muck that finds its way down the hose gets trapped in the filter which I hit with degreaser from time to time. All breather hoses get gunk in them, better in the filter than your combustion chamber..

My breather goes down to a (vented) catchcan I made. It has a tap on it so when the bike is on the stand I can put a drain tray under it and turn the tap on to get rid of any crap. That way I have no issues with anything leaking on to the tyre or whatever.

    Cheers, Will

I reckon oily air getting sucked into the motor  isnt a bad thing.
If  we are gunna save the planet thats what we need to do.
