Hi guys I'm new to the Harley scene and purchased a 2018 Softail Slim.
I just did or should I say attempted a ride to Wondai . When I left home yesterday morning the battery light came on. I made it to Moore bur before getting into Moore the speedo sh!t itself and I lost all my rear lights. Just before pulling up the bike started surging.
I turned the bike off and had a look at the terminals and they were all good. I then tried starting it back up and got nothing but a weird grinding noise. Does anyone have any theories as to what is the problem?

    Bucked fattery?

Not doubting you mate but Why a grinding noise?
When my battery’s knackered, it just engages the starter and clicks a bit. Hasn’t the guts to turn it over. Are you saying the grinding is caused because the starter turns but doesn’t quite engage?

That could be a theory. Would that be stator related? The noise comes from directly below the seat. I don't know what's used to turn the bike over from under there, as I'm not mechanically inclined.

Yeah mate I’m no engineer either but as you said, the starter is pretty much directly under the seat. When you look at your huge Primary cover on the left side, the starter sits between the top rear two bolts, closer to the top right hand bolt. I imagine the grinding sound would be fairly high pitched as the teeth skirted across the gear.
If it’s a relay, maybe it’s more of a fast clicking sound.
Grease Monkey will sort us out.

If it is the starter, what would cause it to fail so early?

It's warranty for sure, sort of need to hear it myself to point at something with any real confidence, is it at the dealer yet?

After 0800 tomorrow morning it's going to be Harleys problem Pauly. Then there's the wait, and f**k knows how long that's going to take.

If your battery has dropped a cell it can appear charged until loaded, if it doesn't have enough grunt the solenoid can jump in and out like that, load test your battery by putting a multimeter on it and hit the start button and see what the reading drops to, should not drop below 8-9 volts under load if it's good.

Funny video there - that slow-talking American drawl, the video is 3 times longer than it had to be!
    It's a "clicky-click" as he says - not grinding.
Check battery terminals connections & voltage.
