I have recently purchased a 2014 Wide Glide, that is stock standard and I am looking at either changing the pipes or full exhaust. It has been recommended that i get a full exhaust, upgraded air filter and a stage 1 tune. What have others done and what would you recommend

i would get a couple of recomendations and then google the shit out of them .. dont do what i did and get the bassani coz i like the look .. and then find out after i had it fitted that it scrapes on the right handers, not only is it unsettling but it wont be long before i got a huge hole in the heat shield : ((

Hi Firie. Welcome to the forum. My long held view is to leave it exactly as it is. Enjoy the bike for it's classic simplicity and you'll sleep better knowing the cops aren't looking for you (at least for the noisy pipes).
Having said that, I bought my Deuce 8 years ago with a stage one already in it but swapped the noisy pipes out for standard ones. Couldn't be happier now with it at 110k trouble free k's

i tend to fully agree with that .. firstly after buying an ultra limited thats had "upgrades" .. pain in arse as far as im concerned , as after riding it for a while its not really what i want it to be and to be honest i would return it to stock if i had the parts they took off .
and my sportglide new exhaust scrapes but i have the brand new stock one to put back on when i wear the hole through lol.

I like the stock look, but I've gone for a K&N filter using the stock cover and a set of V&H mufflers on the stock headers. It's down to your personal taste or lack thereof.

I'm with you, Smokey. I'm running a K & N filter with the stock cover and a set of S & S slip on mufflers on the stock headers.

Depends what year, one lot have cat's in mufflers so easy to deal with and look cool, the later one's have a cat in the header, hard to deal with and look shit....my opinion only :)

Mate before I purchased my 2016 FXDWG I test rode one with stock pipes and didn't like the sound. One of the reasons I traded my Triumph Thunderbird 1600 was because despite having custom pipes made I still couldn't get the sound I wanted. I had the dealer fit a set of V&H plus stage 1 tune / air filter. I love it. The bike is loud but not as loud as some of those obnoxious tools riding Vrods LOL Its possible to ride it without annoying every person around you but if you twist your wrist it livens up.

I’ve tried a lot of pipes on 2006 up wideglide/fatbobs but first
Stock air filters are evil and should be destroyed, there are options from using the stock cover to the big Screaming Eagle suckers and other aftermarket units. Get one.

Yes the 2006 up header with inbuilt cat aren’t the best. Add a pair of S&S slash cut slip ons and they sound sweet. They are pretty much a straight through muffler with large internal flutes that make a great rumble. The SE slip ons are too constrictive.

Removing the cat isn’t really worth it unless you’re chasing max power, not torque, I have a set of decatted headers for sale if you’re interested.

Full 2/2 systems gets much harder. Most anything V&H or Freedom etc will attract a noise infringement and for my $$ give me a headache on long runs. Gotta admit I have V&H Big Radius pipes but they’re in a cupboard, and listed for sale, love the looks, tired of the volume. Don’t mind em on 96 or 103’s but too loud on my 110.

2 into 1. This is a big snake pit, lots of claims and it really depends if you’re looking for torque or power. My thoughts are 2 into 1’s are for power chasers, they work so well in the higher rev range.

So as a general all rounder and less expense, slip ons are the go. I recently picked up a pair of S&S slash cuts for $50, you just gotta be patient and keep watch on the net.

Finally after you’ve settled on your choice, get a decent tune. Unfortunately it could be the most expensive part of the exercise, but the most important.

    Happy hunting
