Hey fellas, super new to HD's and just bought this 95 wide glide. The previous owner didn't take to much care of it and has siliconed the outside of where the primary connects to the case instead of replacing the gasket. Just seeing if there is a primary rebuild kit that includes the gasket? I have attached a photo for reference.
Agree weeps vs leaks. But where that slaz is I would say the engine case primary lip has a crack in it
I remember seeing a kit that replaced the old lip with a new one. It does involve machineing the cases to smooth stuff out and then I 'think' the new part is welded into place OR it may just be a compression fit like a gasket.
It involved a metal ring but I cannot find reference to it.
The James gasket/foam kit is supposed to resolve the problem. I have also heard of great success with JB Steelstick which is a putty like JB weld so can be formed.
Tussuck is there an o'ring groove in the inner primary mating surface?
Yes there is a receiver grove in the inner primary hilly
This might sound a bit rough but would it be possible to superglue the new o'ring into the groove and fit it up?
Think it might fail due to how much of the lip is gone I think I would try what I said before but maybe as a
Actually,
Reading up on the James Gasket kit that might be worth a try.
It totally ignores the lip issue and works to provide a damn good seal between the case and inner primary through a special gasket material. get the kit, make sure both mating surfaces are clean and flat and then have a crack at it. If it still leaks then plan 'B' could be the repair using metal putty option.
Thanks guys, ended up getting everything out using the gasket kit with sealant together it came out look absolutely beautiful without a drop of oil coming out! Now just to replace the rectifier and she is all done!
