2016 1200 Sportster idle speed too high

Strange happenings with my Sporty idle speed, 2016 model, EFI.
I can understand that the engine management system selects a higher idle speed
for cold starting with that speed reducing gradually after a pre-set time or engine
temperature is reached to about 1000 RPM.  Today things got strange on a group ride.

After a stop for about half an hour the bike started as usual but the idle speed dropped
to about 600 RPM but returned to normal after riding for about a further 40 minutes.

Following another break for about half an hour it started fine but I noticed what felt
like a sticking throttle cable but it was the idle speed again, this time at about 3000
RPM.  I tried flicking the run switch off for a few seconds riding at speed but with
no improvement.  At the next stop, after a five minute break, the bike started & revved
to about 3000 RPM but settled back to the normal idle speed with no further problems on
    the day.

Is this some sort of idle speed controlling part that has become faulty or sticky or could the
engine management system have had a glitch which has sorted itself through self diagnosis?

Hey AW, sounds like a sticky IAC, stuff a clean rag in your TB and spray carby cleaner or similar up the hole and see if any crud comes out, can pull it if you want but that's usually enough to clear the problem or at least eliminate it.

Thanks for that GM, had to google what the IAC was!
Seems to be a common problem, lots of videos on cleaning it,
next weeks job to do on the bike.

Good old Google aye, makes a smart phone one of the most powerful tools in human history, here is a link you might find useful if you don't have a parts book, the exploded views help visualise what you are looking for.
