Around town, no but out on the road, every rider gets a nod.  Don't care if I get a response as I do it for my benefit.

This. This is the right attitude.

If you get sniffy because someone didn't do their bit to help you inflate your sense of self worth today, you're doing it wrong.

    Right on the money, Smoky.

Riding in US (on the right side) is possible to use left hand make a small gesture and back to the handle bar. Riding on the left, we can't do that unless you raise your hand very high, even that it looks weird.
I wear half face helmet, and face mask. I nod to all bikers and I always receive nod from all types of bikers. Every Thursday afternoon I will pass by a bar in a country area where I always see other bikers sitting on the deck of the bar. It's a slow turn, so I can raise my hand to them every time.

I even nodded to two police once, and they quickly did a U-turn (really impressive) and pulled me over. To my surprise, they pointed to my DOT helmet just saying "wow, its really low standard....." nothing more. Is DOT legal in Victoria now?

Nice quote James - I'm sure I will find an opportunity to use it.

love the responses here ... agree with a lot of the sentiment, and glad that it's not something that's not "cool".
I've found myself nodding rather than waving because the wrong-handedness of Australia vs US (hmm, should we campaign to switch sides?!) and do it because it keeps me alert... if you're looking around and spotting other bikes you're aware of what's around you and not day-dreaming. I do try and do it for anyone on two wheels and any sort of motor (and I'll also spare a nod for the odd classic car)

We tourers can wave as out on the highways we have cruise on
in town lift a couple fingers as one nods

where I went in the States in the city you could see bikes coming toward you, on the freeway or the highways they were big distances or walls between us, not to many times the opportunity arose

Ive tried the nodding thing but I reckon the other blokes must be nodding at the exact same moment cos
I don't often see a nod in reply. How far do you need to move your head  for it to be considered a "nod" anyway?
I used to wave back in the day on the jap bikes but I never waved at Harleys cos I reckoned most of them were wankers.
I still don't wave at other Harleys because that would be a bit poofy. A Ducati pulled up beside me the other day at the lights and the pilot and his pillion stared straight ahead for at least 30 seconds. That's what I consider unsociable
