Well soap that's your take, my dad used to referee, I know what it takes, criticism is par for the course, at this level of competition you at least need to be consistent if not competent, you know when the refs are doing a good job, you don't notice them.

the reason Referees are protected, because it is so hard to get and then retain them
the one's they do get are

only do it for the power trip
They are always 50% wrong, never 50% right,
they are always on the other teams side
When they do make the right call, its obviously a mistake
they favor special players, never on your team
they are morons that could not play the game and don't know the rules
they get their legitimacy questioned including the marital status of their parents
    death threats

the best candidate are the ones that sit home on the couch and watch it on telly, with the aid of slow motion from 10 different angles, and 50 years experience
never gone out and carried the whistle, perfect for the retiring player to give back to the game.
yet here we are, I have a wife who can watch a whole game when her team is winning, yet it is never a better team has one when her team loses, always the referee

if you really need to retort I am behind the couch

    Appreciate your view.
I tried to be specific in criticisms. I get mistakes are made. We all make mistakes. But there are two on the field, two touchies and a bunker and the result is as described.

Now mistakes are made. Will there be a press conference where the refs boss owns the howlers and say his lads will try to do better? Nah.

The fan has to wear it. Something ain't right with that.

Have to agree , if there was 1 ref on field certainly we expect there are errors, but we expect less errors the more refs/scrutiny on the game and that's not happening. Its like listening to Phil Gould comment on state of origin...his words are not corresponding to what your eyes are seeing

On a different topic, gee it sucks having 9 'own' origin.
I like hearing JT but that's it - most of the rest of the commentary, esp Gould, are biased and/or not helpful. And the bloody ads!

Channel 9's efforts are a good ad for Foxtel subscriptions.

I have to agree, with they are not noticed when performing.
great that your Dad, upmost respect to him.
I refereed A grade soccer for 10 years after I played 20 years of A and Reserves grades, while not stroking my own (although small) penis, I also had 3 F&B for my club and gained life member from the association.
So for me, I could play, then enforcing the rules was a big change, I would play advantage as often as I could and only pull it up when stupidity prevailed, the whole aim was to let the game play as you said, from the referee, unnoticed, I do know I made mistakes, should have been a foul or maybe should have not been a foul, but have the strength to get on with it,
I will conceed that my level was not career breaker or the big money the NRL or top of the other codes are, yet our level also wanted the ref to be fair.
week in, week out, the give it up you shit from the losing team/supporters was a regular call, yet again after I retired from the field, I was asked back by many detractors with all of a sudden "I was a great referee"     Fickle memories

But as this is an NRL thread, best get back to it, yes the referee should be the absolute best at this level

Origin is the ONLY LIVE game i watch on TV. I get raped by Foxtel $70 a month to watch footy but enjoy Andrew Voss who is the Bruce Mc Eveny of stats. I will give absolute respect to Ray Warren and listen to his last broadcast rumored to be the final game of State of origin

It is what it soap, my bitching on here won't change anything I know, it's not sour grapes, we weren't good enough on the night, shit it was errors allover, refs and players, even one coach would be thinking he could of done something a bit better in the last ten.
You are right though, I couldn't do the job, not a hope.

    What you paying $70 for?
I get sport and normal for $39 plus the good channels that have GoT for another $10. Don't watch most of it and without NRL I wouldn't have Foxtel (most Cows games aren't on 9).

I have been with Foxtel for perhaps 11/12 yrs and slowly cut back to the basic. State of origin is a delayed telecast on Fox but watch UFC/all wsbk and moto gp so cant find alternatives
