2008 CVO Springer up for a compensator upgrade at 38,000 K's
I have found a part # for the Screamin Eagle Compensator kit , 42200064A , local HD dealer reckons this is all I'll need ?
I have also found part # 40100061 , which I believe is the same as the above compensator kit BUT with a "new suitable rotor" as my bike is a 2008
Are there any (further) updated parts that anyone could recommend ? I know the SE compensators have had a couple of updates themselves ( at least !)
I hear mixed reports out of the US regarding the "new" SE Compensator. Some very good like yours , some not so glowing.
I would rather fit "Genuine HD" parts I think as you just know they're gunna fit.
My stock compensator lasted 38,000 K's but I am not a burnout dude and never wrap it on until the motor has warmed up properly. Baggers are also well heavier of course
So I will give the SE comp' upgrade a go. Just trying to make sure I get the right parts and or the most updated.
Thanks pauly
I noticed a gradually increasing "chain rattle" type of noise , more noticeable while riding than when idling. Worst around 2000 RPM
Also the occasional loud "clunk" when accelerating after a period of cruising. I suspected the compensator as it is OEM from 2008
Changed the primary oil , first time in 10 months but maybe 2500 K's , plug looked like a Christmas tree with swarf.
Always usually a "wee bit" but this was like a hedgehog compared to "normal"
Cleaned off the plug , new quart of Formula+ ( normally I use Synthetic but keep the Formula for bikes I service where the guys want "Harley Oil" )
Worst noise was on a recent 41C day hence the looksee and the Formula +
Rode the bike yesterday 27C over to a well known Perth Indy shop to get his opinon
Other than the "whooshing/chain slap" behaved itself all the way. At idle at his place he deduced "compensator fucked" most likely on the way out.
He has the full kit with rotor 40100061 in stock (Frasers don't !). I do some work for this guy, and I don't have the "special tools" needed for this job.
Not worth me buying them for a once in 10 years job. So it will be going in to him next week when he gets a slot in his schedule.
I already have a much younger outer primary from a Dyna Switchback that has the cast in oil tray , may use that in the build.
Part # 60784-06A New bike take-off for a chrome kit a while back . Been sitting in my shed ever since. Polished alloy tho' not chrome.
Alloy finish of course so mebbe it won't look the goods. We'll see
Thanks for the headsup Carbon, I will look for that while in there.
I don't have the clutch hub locking tool ( I know they are easy enough to make !) but also I don't have a 170ft/lb torque wrench neither.
I have never personally had a compensator unit fail in all these years , and had several bikes go 70,000 K's before I sold them.
On my 2000 Deuce the compensator sprocket nut came loose causing a khant of a noise , primary off , Loctite red , on with a borrowed torque set rattle gun.
Good for another 30,000 K's on that bike !
Well fitted up the Compensator upgrade kit 40100061. Had to remove the inner primary ( Khant of a job which is why many folks grind the primary case below the stator.
As the bike is a 2008 the original stator needed to be replaced with the one in the kit
All seemed to go smooth , used the more modern alloy primary cover with the built in "Oil splash tray"
Started it up , small run , not too smooth and CLUNK when shutting off. WTF ? $635 Aussie dollars worth of parts and it's worse ?
Also noisy as before while riding , whistley/whirring and the odd occasional clunk. that was yesterday.
Internet search last night until midnight , whipped it open again today , put an extra dish spring in ( as suggested in other forums etc etc )
Another 2 hour job after cleanup etc etc...STILL NOISY AND CLUNKLY on shutdown and whirring on the move.
Yes sounds just like a bad primary as in all the youtube videos.
Next stripdown this coming Sunday maybe The indy shop is going to try another younger part number kit that only has the hardware , no rotor required.
We'll see how that goes. Struggling to imagine what may be the problem to be honest ?
Funnily enough no !
Only the slightest wear was evident on the original 2008 OEM ramps etc. The "spring pack" had lost tension , but of course they are "peened in" and do not seem to be replaceable/updateable.
That original unit lasted 38000 K's in a torquey 110. Very little and/or NO clunking in the OEM parts , or not yet. 4000 K's oil changes helped there I'm sure
Stu and I were talking at length about the Baker compensator with the oil scoop design. I have read in the US of spacing dramas with them Re the chain and sprockets and getting the alignment correct. Stators etc having to be shaved etc etc. That is why I decided to try the SE compensator kit actually
That's is where I will be going next if this "updated update" of a kit don't work Sunday...Stu has enquired already as to supply logistics
