2018 Fatboy So Far

I have owned 3 fattys, 98, 2010 lo, 2016 S and now the 18... Initially I was impressed with how much more you can lean her without scraping the boards, but still had the 16 S just in front as far as overall rideability, till I changed a few things on the 18.. Screaming Eagle Tuner and Vance and hines big shot staggereds with quiet baffles in... well the quiet baffles were a mistake, they were quite loud in the fatboy lo with same pipes but the M8 motor being 4 valve heads is a lot quieter due to the pulse difference with the 2 extra valves, so I took the quiet baffles out and its about perfect, not really too loud.  Would of been a lot louder on the twin cam.  Next was the Burleigh bars, perfect for me, changed the whole feel of the bike and look, I don't care what anyone says my harley has to do it for me visually... Next was the rear shock, the stock one is not that great in my opinion plus a big fat tyre like that needs to be closer to the guard, didn't look right with the guard sitting so high so I put legend air suspension in, did about 1000kms and decided they were not for me, the ride was great when I had it tuned in right which was easy but when you hopped off it the air shocks make the back go really high in the air unless you drop the air.. now me being anal about visuals of my bike I just couldn't walk away with the backend looking like a trail bike so would dump all the air which looked cool as slammed down but then when back on you had to get it just right again... good shocks but didn't want to do that all the time.. So looked into alternative aftermarket shocks and discovered YSS shocks that did one for the new softails, what I really liked about them is that they can have their length changed +/- 10mm which would be somewhere around half to a inch at the swingarm in height.. so I ordered a custom one at 305mm so could go up to 315mm lengthened right out, stock shock is around 318, 310mm drops your rear about a inch or so.  As you can see in the pics the bike now looks low and mean, like a fatty should but the amazing thing is the ride with the YSS shock is at least as good if not better than the stock that is longer and has the back guard too high, 2 of us on the bike bouncing it up and down did not bottom it out, really impressed with them and cost about 950 dollars, superior to Progressive in my opinion and cheaper.. So now I have owned 4 fattys and 4 other harleys, and which one is my favorite now for overall riding and visuals etc... now hands down it is the 18 fatboy, but only with the changes that I made.. Still want to put a cam in it, undecided on which one. Well thats enough talking shit from me, just wanted to put a good positive plug out there for the new fattys after a few changes...

That’s a beautiful looking bike, Nelson. I wouldn’t mind one myself :-) And some good info in your post (especially for a newbie like myself) re shock length v ride height etc.

    Looks the part Nelson!
your take on the 4 valve, making motor quite , compared to twin can and older, the way I see it is more restrictive exhaust via cam timing, I think that is part of the reason they make good torque but not high HP. but it's the Torque you can feel.
I was shown a few Dyno  print outs of m8 with Andrews cam ( not 100% what grind ) but I was very impressed, that would be a great street cam!! It was making over 100 foot pound of Torque at 1,000 rev & made 127 foot pound of tourque, but had a good tune

    Looks good Nelson.

Nice bike . Only criticism on the 2018 Fat is that when you sit on the seat you can see into the "rear" of the front headlight ( its not covered like the previous Fatboys)

Plus with the extra power its still only got ONE front brake - what the fork

nice write up you did though

I've got the 2016S and took a 2018 M8 for an extended test ride. Found the 2018 M8 seat position seemed further forward to the point I felt a bit cramped (I'm 6"). Lean angle was heaps better but the overall smoothness and new seating position made it seem more 'euro' than the Twin Cam. I liked the reduction in engine noise on the M8, more focus on the exhaust but would need a decent set of pipes from stock but that's standard on all HDs.
Have you noticed a difference in the seating position?

    Good write up
Its probably a little early to answer but what is tyre choice like for the 18" wheels on the new fattys?

I reckon a M8 fatty will be my next Harley. And I factor in changing:
    Bars
    Seat
    Intake
    Exhaust
    Tuner
    Suspension

On any Harley I look at.

Good write up. Quick question, how do those solid rims feel on a windy day. Most know that the earlier Fatty's use suffer a bit by getting blown around a bit on windy days with the solid rims on them, any difference with the new bike.

Guys who’ve fitted Breakout wheels, I’ve only seen two, both reported better handling and no wind buffeting. Guess it’s a result of the reduced weight (so less gyroscope affect) and the spokes.

I got to "initially I was impressed" and then I was like. What and then who and then I died a little..
I got through though. Good post and write up.

Oh yes, I'm sure we've spoken about helmets and bags of rubbish on the porch when staging the perfect pic.

Yeah steelo I think it's established that public toilets are ok in the background of photos but not helmets haha

Hi again, sorry I have not replied but am in NZ on holiday and have not really had the chance.. but to answer some questions.. On the question of the M8 engine with 4 valve heads being quieter... I agree with your reasoning as well for the M8 being quieter but still totally believe that having 4 valves in a head compared to 2 is going to be quieter due to the 2 pulses of energy being released compared to 1, albeit on a very close as far as milliseconds etc it is still enough to be quieter, so lets say we are both right... On the question of solid wheels and the wind, this is my 4th fatty and they have all have solids.. now I ride in some pretty wild conditions some times and don't notice anything too dramatic concerning the solids but I also believe that over the years I have probably compensated for this without really realising it.. maybe there is a noticeable difference but I have been riding solids too long, lol...  The rear of the headlight being visible while riding is a good point but to be honest I had to go out and sit on my bike after reading it to check this out, amazing what the brain blocks out, lol, one of my plans in the future is a complete front end change which I have not done on any past Harleys, an exile cycle wide glide type front or even a radical girder front end, just thinking at this stage.. On the pic thing of stuff on the porch and helmets... intentionally done.. I ride a open face black helmet, and I use an old army bag, the old school way to carry shit so that is on the porch... all placed on purpose to show where I was at, another lol.. Harleys are a very personal items, shaped and moulded into what is hot and cool for the owner, sometimes not much different to stock other times radically different to stock, but all just how we want them eventually, I never criticise someone elses beliefs on what is hot for them but I have always found critics that want to do that to me, mainly it is on the adjustment of ride height or changing of stock shocks etc for something else.... always stuff like Harley designed that model to have that amount to trail, rake blah blah blah and the shocks are optimal for the model etc.... all I can say is that is bullshit, and without going in to my reasons I will leave it at that... Change things up, ride aggressively, ride safely, be staunch.. Everyone have a happy new year...

Hey NelsonDude love the bike and the attitude. If anyone else does not like it Fck em. It's your bike and you build it the way you want. I am guessing that you are from Nelson on the South Island? My missus is from Mot, lovely piece of the planet there!!! Oh yeah, have a happy New Year yourself.

    Hey Nelsondude
Good write up mate.  Nice to hear from someone who has a new fatty + has had the older models for a comparison as I am looking at getting one.  Just got to get to a stealer for a test ride to be sure. All the best for the new year. Cheers
