I saw this bike online the other day and I fucking LOVE it. It’s for sale but it’s custom built on the USA. Now, I have no intention of buying it but I have a mate who loves it too and he’s after a bike. This is probably still out of his price range but it got me curious as to what would be involved in getting such a beast registered here in Oz??
The builder is Backbone Built Bikes. The pix are from his website (Shooter Images) so if it’s an issue, just delete them.

Where do you want to start with what you need to do for rego

I'd suggest to your mate to buy a standard Harley or even a done up bike and do the customizing yourself
It would probably be cheaper and not have the hassle of import, ADR and rego

Lol. I’m guessing there’s a bit involved then? I’ve got no idea what’s expected from motor reg. I was just thinking that because there’s nothing outrageous looking about it (like massively raked forks etc) that it might not be so difficult.
As I said, it’s more just curiousity than anything likely to happen. The price tag seemed pretty reasonable considering everything that’s been done. It was priced at 27k USD which is around 36k au.
I dunno, it looks way better than a Breakout or Fayboy of similar value.

That 36 k will turn into a $60k bill by the time it gets here and everything has to be changed to adr specs
Do as others have said buy std harley than swap it out over time  or buy a chopper already done n regod
And as cool As that thing looks it’s probley a pig to ride and only good for posing lol

Cheers fellas. The old “Ten foot poll” treatment it is then ;-)
As I said, it was more being curious as to what’s involved rather than a serious consideration.

I must admit, it HAS been pretty satisfying making changes to my bik over he last 12 months (as small as they are).

to me it look's like a twin cam ( carb ) softail that has a swing arm fitted and shocks like a dyna, with aftermarket springer.
the bike is just built for show & style so would not be a fantastic ride. And I'd say fall apart if a rider started to use it daily .
If you like that style just look for a 1999 to about 2005 softail thats registered. if you could find a springer softail would be even better.
you could even get a springer softail EVO to look like that. difference is Twin Cam smoother, EVO you feel the HD vibes.
I think it could be fun and, you would know the bike a lot better building your self. just need work shop manual, a set of tool's a shed large enough & time. you would start not knowing much, & Finnish knowing your ride , doing all own work n service.
    but painting is a bitch!!

Think the boys are correct to suggest to look but don't touch. I can see how it appeals on the bang for buck equation but thats until your given the bill for the items that need replacing to get it regoed. If you could really get it very cheap and you had the spare $ it would look great in the man cave!

Lets hope Dirty Bird Concepts has a better business model than OCC who were very short lived in QLD. The OCC shop was not far from here and i dont think they sold a single bike. We also had Big Bear choppers , they sold a few but would not trade them back in!! People who bought them are still stuck with them

A mate here in Adelaide has a Big Bear. Needed a different front end, exhaust, brakes, lights to get it registered. Put it back to chopper and gets pulled up every run we go on which means our bikes also get inspected with the usual results.
I confess I’m interested in a Captain America, (a correct Pan etc) at least there’d be some chance of getting my money back but let’s face it, anyone spending any amount on a pre or post purchased customised bike has to realise they are extremely unlikely to be adding any resale value.
But then I guess the days of Harley’s holding good resale values is disappearing anyway, not that I think it worries Bogn, he likes em different :)

I hear you mate. We certainly dont buy them for their appreciating value and we knowingly spend shit loads on them as well. Big bear were a good product till the frames started to snap and they were sued. The major drama was that they had repurchase agreements with GE (Finance company) and Textron where if a dealer went bankrupt, Big Bear would take the bikes back and redistribute them through another dealer. Only thing is, Textron and GE stopped doing flooring but still wanted BBC to pay for the bikes, without allowing for them to be redistributed to other dealers. So Textron and GE would sell the bikes for 50 cents on the dollar, then turn around and hand Big Bear a bill.  This came in August of ’07 they built a 100 bikes-a-month. The very next month, sales went from 100 to 50. Then they stayed between 30 -50 all the way through till about Oct. of ’08. Then they went down to 20, then 15, then during the winter at the beginning of ’09, it hovered around 10-15. In 2010, it went down to about 10 a month. 2011 went down to about five or six a month, worldwide!” This ultimately cost them their business

This is the thing I like most about this forum. I know sweet FA about bikes and the history of bikes but there’s a fuck tonne of knowledge here ;-)
Yeah Ratbob, I could see how an “out there” looking bike could be a pain in the arse for everyone. I don’t know how different I like em ;-) but I like what I like :-) Lowered Fatboys and Breakouts are just awesome looking, so anything along those lines is a hit in my book.

Thanks again for the great info :)  I’ll be googling the other builders mentioned :-)
