So my 07 springer is showing signs of needing a new starter clutch and was wondering if anyone has replaced one using the all balls aftermarket one?

I'll be getting myself a new battery 1st  to see if that eliminates the kick back I'm getting on hot starts so may not need to delve that far into it but if I do

what's the consensus on the all balls unit?

I put the All Balls starter clutch in my '04 Night Train after I had to push start it across the Nullarbor...

Took longer than I thought but things usually do the first time. From memory the hardest bit was removing the battery box to get to the starter. I followed the manual though. Primary cover also needs to come off so new gasket and oil here.

check battery first like BB mentioned. the twin cam's have always had a starting issue that no other type HD I've owned had. I ran manual decomp valves had to push them in before starting, they pop out themselves after motor starts. I still had starter motors fail, I used to put stock HD re build kit in it worked till next starter went. changed battery's every five years or close to that. I road bike lot of k's & raced it.

Cheers for the replies guys, yep battery will be first port of call, will measure what I'm getting under load sometime on the weekend.

G TEEZ sounds as though you've done ok with the All Balls so will go with that if it comes to it, mine being a softy will have to remove

oil tank to get the starter out by the look of it.

Installed All Balls starter clutch in 2009 Electra Glide ,,, same part as your 2007 Springer....
The All Balls has a larger gear , and sealed bearing, (see pics) …

From my experience a clucking/ failing  compensator can be the culprit for a failing starter clutch... As mentioned a failing battery can have similar symptoms …

If you go down the road of replacing the starter clutch,, just be aware of the small ball bearing that goes down shaft, (check out a parts diagram to see what I'm talking about).
The All Balls had the small ball bearing already down the shaft, (did not come in separate packaging).. Thinking the small ball bearing did not come with the starter clutch, I installed the ball bearing from my old starter clutch … So , now I have 2 ball bearings down the shaft … Buttoned everything up ,, start bike,,, well fuck me ,, what a hell of a racket ,,, only had finger on start button for a second and stopped... No damage ,,, after some research , unbuttoned everything,,, removed extra small ball bearing ,,, buttoned everything back up ,,, all Good ….

All balls starter clutch on Left,, Stock on Right.

Thanks for the heads up Mark, if I end up replacing it, you may have just saved me a lot of time.

Checked battery today, was 12.8 before cold start up, started no worries then at 2.5 / 3 grand was 14.5.

Need to take it for a run get it hot and do the same again, pissin with rain all day today though so will have to wait.

what about stock clutch hub ring gear? last I looked stock late clutch hub ring gear very small teeth. have they put heavier big teeth ring gear? as if you go strong in starter but weak in ring gear that will be next thing to go if high cranking pressure big motor.

Krash, not saying it doesnt happen but Ive had loads of big cube HC motors come thru my shop and Ive never seen a ring gear issue. With decomp valves it shouldnt be an issue
