Breakout tank badge refit after tank paint

Recently oem tank badges removed for tank painting and then refitted using dbl sided tape
The painter applied tape to remaining foam on badge backside and eventually tape pulled away from the badge foam.
Once foam is cleaned on underside of badge there remains a 2mm recess so any dbl sided tape needs to be at least 3mm thick, 2mn to fill recess then an additional 1mm so edge of badge does not contact tank.

Has anyone removed & refitted breakout badges pictured and if so what did you use to refit

3M make a specific product for it. Auto Emblem tape or some such.

Spoke to 3M advisor and was told they have a VHB tape specific to the task but its only 1.1mm so i would need to stack 3x sheets..3M advised against stacking the tape.
Im guessing this is why the paint shop did not remove remaining foam off the badge after removal.

Just looked at some images of 3M tape. They have a great range. Unlikely you would need that full 3mm. Just get some 1.1mm and trim to nearly edge of badge. You'll get adhesion across 70% I wouldn't "think" a little air pocket / gap in the centre will affect it.
Edit. Sorry, I saw where you said there is a 2mm indent? That's a lot..

3M VHB foam tape is conformable and as such the thicker it is the more jelly like it becomes , so prone to vibration and since badges are heavy they could impact tank .
Found 3M VHB 4991 100mm × 200mm × 2mm sheets on ebay for $12.75 aud from china.
3M 4991 only comes in rolls here in Oz @ $180 per 33m roll.

Whats the oem gap between badge and tank ?

Have you got it sorted Bodgie?.
If not, you could buy (or find) a few bits of suitable rubber that were 2-3mm thick(or whatever works), cut them to the right size/shape then wrap the double sided tape around the rubber.
Giving you the ideal item at the right thickness..
Or as loopie said, sikka flex wont let go. Just beware it can be messy if you are not careful.

Na not sorted was thinking sika flex ally disc to take up the recess then just use 3M VHB 1.1 mm
Which is available in small rolls from bunnings
Tho the whole no badge idea is growing on me.

Thought of sikaflex but what if i want to remove badge again
Noticed under side of badge is concave so ally isnt goin to work will have to be rubber or suitable dense foam.
Sikaflex rubber to badge then use 1.1mm tape

Just use the sikka in 2 or 3 small blobs about the size of a pea or small bean....baked bean...small broadbean....large blackbean etc.
If you are worried about getting it off again, simple! just look up the old topic on this forum about "removing factory reflectors".

Read a pdf by the manufacturer of sika flex and they say once cured nothing disolves it.
Bikes imaco so im putting new badges on cant be f$$ed with dbl sided tape and buts of rubber.
If im lucky the old ones will sell on fleabay
If not they make for nice toolbox ornements.

Personally i believe it suits my bike and somehow does give the illusion of fatter tank.
I got.2 weeks before new badges roll up who knows i may get used to it without.

Yeah, it does suit the bike.
How about this idea?.
You can buy "rare earth magnets" off ebay dirt cheap.
I use ones a fair bit that are 20mm dia x 3mm thick and they are really strong. You can get other thicknesses and diameters.
Perhaps you could glue the magnet to the underside of your badge with the sikka flex then just stick the badge to the tank once the sikka had set.
No one would know that it was magnetic force holding it on and you could have the best of both worlds, have a badge when you want one and take it off when you don't.
