Selling a Bike - Q & A

I'll soon be putting the Fatbob up for sale and, while certain things may seem obvious, i've never sold a bike before so i figured the only silly questions are the one's you don't ask.
My main one is - What's the consensus when it comes to test rides?
Some say don't allow them, but i'd personally be reluctant to buy a used bike myself without first riding it.
So - Is it a fair expectation that a seller should request the full asking price in cash as a deposit?
What's your legal recourse if the test rider bins it i.e is a "you drop it, you bought it" disclaimer legally enforceable?
    What are the common pitfalls/scams/ripoffs?
Is it all just a massive pain in the arse and easier just to trade in?

Again most of this is common sense stuff that i can probably answer myself or take it up with QBE, but just wondering what others opinions or experiences may be on the matter.

I can add an nominated rider to my policy so i call them and email the riders details before they ride it. I have got them to sign a doc that stipulates if they bin it they are up for my $500 excess. YOUI is my insurer

Brilliant. So effectively add them to the policy on the day, and even request the excess amount as a cash deposit.
    Cheers PB.

I tend to just say screw it and lose some $$$ but save on the hassle via trading in (especially if you're buying another harley)

I was offered 10k trade for my 2010 street bob with a few good upgrades and 90k on the clock.
I put it on one of the facebook pages for 13K and sold it that night. I didn't have any issue with someone test riding the bike as long as I was counting the cash while they did it.

Still planning on a sporty and a tourer?

Yeah I was thinking trading might be a lot less hassle. I’ll advertise it in any case, but If I can get a decent changeover from the dealer, who I have a decent relationship with, then it’ll probably go that way.
Waiting to see what the 2019 announcements offer up, but all things being equal I’ll be jumping into a Road Glide Special. Deep down hoping they provide a 114 option in the touring line up. There’s also a bit of chatter about the infotainment system being due for an overhaul as well.
As far as a sporty goes, I’m holding off for now and will pick up a used model down the track, purely for hot rodding purposes.

I've had a dozen bikes over the last 40 years. I never rode any of them before I bought them and I've never allowed a test ride on any I've sold.

    not this shit again.
If someone wants a ride give em a fucken ride.
Everyone test drives a car when selling it and most of the time they are worth more.

FFS they are insured, gezz some of you blokes live in "doom and gloom".

When selling I'll let the buyer take a ride if I feel I can trust them, after face to face, viewing licence etc,

and go with them on another bike, if they're going to steal the fucking thing and can out ride me on my local twisties

then I'll take my chances with my insurance.

I can only speak from my own experience selling a bike, the goose stacked it!
The first thing that raised a red flag was he didn't arrive in a car or on a bike, I picked him up from the station.
I made him leave the FULL asking price (only $750) my reasoning to him was he could ride off into the sunset
    leaving me with nothing.

With the money in hand it was obvious he was clueless as he rode off (said he rode his mates 900's, must be
more difficult to ride a 250).  I heard the screech of tyres & the bang, seemed he couldn't stop in time using
just the back brake & in a panic grabbed a heap of front brake & you can guess the rest.

Managed to get the bike fixed enough to get him on his way with the date & TIME on both copies of the receipt
and the $750 in cash (only wanted $500 but no negotiation once the bike was bent).

Funny to look back on it now but it was incredibly stressful & upsetting at the time.
