Has any one had a leather jacket made by Mars Leathers in Elizabeth St,  Melbourne.?
If so what was the quality like and how much would I be looking at spending?
I believe their workmanship is excellent.

    cheers

I've had Mars jackets for years, and put them to the test a few time.
Extremely well made, and good for repairs as well.
Maybe not as cheap as the Indian made stuff that's around, but you pay for quality.
They will last you a lifetime if you give them a little care.

thanks for that speedzter, I have heard that the quality had slipped as most of their stuff was imported now and not made by them.  Think I best give them a ph call and find out as it will be a road trip to Melbourne to get measured

Nothing against tailor made stuff but why wouldn't you go into a dealer and pick off the shelf any one of a hundred different styles and shades of HD jackets with liners and riding armour already built in. You get to see the quality up front and it'd have to be lot cheaper than spending a K on made to measure

That's  sad to hear that they are importing stuff now.
Definitely worth a phone call to sus them out.
I've seen the quality of the genuine Harley stuff, and it's generally very lightweight in comparison.

I had pants and jacket made 30 years ago, lasted 15 years until I was too fat for them.  Took a break from Mars gear until 6 years ago when I got a jacket custom made, it's still as good as when I got it.  If the quality has dropped then it's only recently.
But... don't expect all the features or the perfect finish of an off the shelf jacket, you get really solid leather with extra leather on shoulders and elbows and 1st quality zips and they make them to fit fat buggers with short arms or skinny buggers with long arms.

So if off the shelf gear doesn't fit you well then you could do worse but if off the shelf gear fits well then personlly I wouldn't bother.

So with my non off the shelf body, I went to get a new motorbike riding suit, and went to a dodgy tailor. The tailor put me on the platform surrounded by mirrors, takes all my measurements, and says “OK, come beck in a week, I'll have your suit ready.”
A week later I went back. “Here’s your suit,” says the tailor.
“Well, I’d like to try it on,” I say. I go into the dressing room, take all my clothes off, and start putting on the suit. It’s all but impossible to get into the thing! Finally, I get it on, come out, and get up on the platform again.
I looked at myself and say to the tailor, “This suit is terrible! Look at this! The jacket sleeves are so long they’re flopping! One sleeve is longer than the other, the shoulders are so narrow I can’t even breathe! The pants legs are baggy! But at the same time squeeze my hips!”
“Wait a minute,” says the tailor, interrupting me. “Here’s what you’ll do. You’ll go like dis…” And the tailor shows me how to hold in my sleeves, hunch up my right shoulder, pull back my left arm, bend over, tuck in the baggy pants with one hand, all at the same time, to “make it fit”.
A few minutes later I come out. I was hobbling down the sidewalk, trying to get to my bike while still holding my sleeve, hunching my shoulders, tucking the pants, etc, etc.
I saw two old ladies waiting for a bus across the street looking at me.
“Hey!” says one of the ladies, shaking her head in pity. “Look at that poor crippled man!”
“Yes,” says the other lady, also shaking her head. “But doesn’t his bike suit fit nice!”

in 2002 I was in Yagoona ( Sydney's west ) at DBT leathers trying on leather jacket, could not find one perfect fit, Doug the owner said no problem I'll tailor make one for you $250 take a week. well the jacket still fits perfect & I tested it out @ 180kph on SID surface ( no skin off & straight back on my feet) my mate had them make him full leather to race Top Bike ( nitro Harley ) after my off I took them back for Doug to go over them ( stitching ). used to take mates down to do repairs as his pipe threw nitro flames on his right leg. so stitching needed checking regular.
sadly Doug & Betty retired. but both leathers still still hard at work.
