Painting a HD caliper

    Hi all

I'm after some advice regarding painting the front and rear calipers in Red on my Fatboy

For some reason i am drawn to that red caliper as some sort of a custom / performance "look" .

HD doesn't have produce them  in Red for an 03 ( they have for about 05 onwards from memory).

I went to a spray painter today and he mentioned that the paint is quite specific in that the brake dust is quite abrasive and it "affects" the paint that you apply .

I respect his opinion as he was pretty thorough and was effectively turning down the work ???

    So has

    - anyone had experience at painting calipers

    - is there a special paint to be used

    - does the surface have to be sand blasted at all

Ide be interested in anyone thoughts on the paint system or even someone in Brisbane that you could recommend to do the work

    Cheers to all

Not painted a bike caliper, but I did the front and rear ones on my old Prado, and the paint is still ok on them, 4 or 5 years later, bit faded from new, but still pretty good. I just gave them a good clean with acetone when I had them apart and painted with zinc primer and top coated with spray can epoxy metal paint I got at Bunnings.
    Good luck :)

I did mine in my garage, all it cost was the tin of caliper paint from Supercheap or wherever I bought it.
Cleaned up the old caliper with emery paper, smoothed it out and painted it. Still looks brilliant till this day:

I painted my VR Commodore with the VHT calliper paint years ago and it did the trick. After I sold it I painted the callipers on my new car with a
product I bought on eBay. Can't remember the name but it has ceramic in it and you paint it on by brush. Turned out fantastic even better than the spray. For around $40 well worth it

Thanks to all you blokes that have provided some input ?
Cannot tell you how appreciative I am of your assistance
Looks like I may be able to do it after all eh

The only query I have is that the guy I spoke to said that car calipers are different to bike calipers in that bike calipers are much more “ on show” than a car caliper as the car calipers are hidden ( hence the paint on a calipers got to be perfect )
But you guys looked like you haven’t had these issues ??

The good brake calliper paint (in a rattle can) usually requires a baking in the oven to properly harden it. Probably best not to do it with the chicken roast though.

Did you end up getting brush marks in the caliper at all ( as you brushed V sprayed it on)

    Be interested in your thoughts

Another one that’s done a car not a bike, I pulled the calipers off, plugged the banjo bolt thread and masked over pistons/seals then sand blasted all the old paint off.
I just used high temp paint from super cheap auto (might actually be caliper paint) left to dry naturally, no oven.
Once the red was dry I put the stickers on and then used high temp clear coat. Both the red and clear were just spray can paint.
    Hope this helps

Just curious, Kato but does you bike have ABS ?? Dealer told me I have to bring it in to get the ABS system bleed. Told that that is true if you get air in the ABS pump module.
    Cheers

Ken - No ABS on mine ( wish it did though) Its a MASSIVE step in safety

    Pity it cannot be retrofitted

    Safer for sure.
Not so easier to self maintain, $140 to bleed the front brakes ??

VHT caliper paint. It comes in gloss colours and you cure it at 93 degrees C for one hour in your kitchen oven.
Piss easy and very good results.
