Hi all, just pulled my tin set off for an anticipated paint job and am wondering if anyone here in Perth WA can recommend someone reputable and trustworthy for the job. Not going fancy design just something like a dark black cherry. I am going to try and save myself some money by doing the majority of prep work myself. I was quoted a couple of years ago from a car panel and paint $1000 so am I right thinking that's the ballpark figure. I had previously painted the tank and front guard myself with spray cans and they held up for around a year and then started cracking. The rear fender was bought pre-painted in gloss black . What is the best paint system for durability, shine and chemical resistance?

Hey Tom, unless you have knowledge of spray painting, look it up on Mr. Google or online stuff. There was a guy who demonstrated preperation/painting bikes through the old HD forum link years ago. Yank and was not too bad.
I was an apprentice spray painter many years ago at Holden dealership, claridges, and ater 3 months spray painted a 50"s Rolls Royce, in undercoat.. derrr...
anyone can do that, but I got to drive this Silver Ghost thing. Left to become an apprentice Carpenter, but then left that to become apprentice something, then apprentice printer..Those were the days.Three months trial, and you tossed it in to try something else.
Anyway mate, look up, and remember the big thing with spray painting is Preparation, and Preparation, which doesn"t mean having ya tea and biscuits sorted out for smoko.

I get that you're wanting to do the prep and save some money but some spray painters, if you expect them to stand by their work, might want to do the prep themselves. Something to consider....

    Gidday Tom,
I just painted my softail myself in the garage using metallic 2 pack and it turned out great.
At first I wanted to prep and have local panel beater spray finish coats, but they would not do it. They wanted the whole job or none.
But I got a good tip from them, make sure to use a top of the range quality Hi Solid clear. That will give your the "show shine". Best advice I could have got. Off the gun it looks brilliant! I used Mipa brand (German) but use what you can get - just be sure it's a good brand.
YouTube has plenty of great vids with great tips too.
PS: I left the fuel pump inside the gas tank and used a rubber plug to stop off the filler hole. Masked off the fittings and came out OK and no problems with the fuel pump after either.
Have a crack, just give yourself plenty of space, the overspray on the clear is sticky shit and can get very cloudy in an enclosed space, so more space the better.
PPS: USE A TOP QUALITY BREATHING MASK - 2 PACK IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU.

hey top job, years ago I used to spray sea containers must have painted a thousand of them vast majority in primer though and the rest in industrial enamel.I also painted my WB ute in a gravel driveway twice so I know I can do it. One issue is I need to upgrade my spray equipment as the stuff I have is old and by the time I factor that in and the probability of not using it again steers me in the direction of getting someone to do it. By the way whats, the colour it looks great and I like the fact its de-badged

Cheer Fat Tom... the colour is a custom mix (basically a metallic charcoal grey with a hint of blue/green in different light). I'd love to spend the dosh for a professional job but the finance minister just sez "doesn't your bike have paint already?" lol. It 's all good fun.
