Battery Charge.

Hi....Anybody here seem to have a problem with there sporties battery holding charge.
Mine and my brothers sporties have the same issue. Unless you take it for a ride at least once in seven days the battery will need a run on a tender to top it back up.
Both bikes have batteries less than a year old, both are genuine HD items.
Anybody?
Thanks.

Not sure if your bikes are alarmed but my Fatbob’s the same, the alarm system bleeds a bit and winter doesn’t help. Did you read the Cold Starting Issue thread, if not It’s one page back under Active Topics. Bit relevant. My Wideglide with no alarm could be left for about 6 weeks.

Pretty typical, especially if it has the Security Module.
No compression release on a sporty, it takes a fair few CCA's to start them.
I was quite fortunate I rode my old sporty 3-4 times a week, but when I did let it sit it struggled. Never used a tender however.
My 110ci dyna different story, needs to live on the trickle charge.

Yes very common, both my sporties did it, like everyone said mainly because of the alarm. But don’t worry it’s take atleast 3-4 years for the battery to completely die, I just replaced mine this week in my 2014 48 it was the original battery. Just keep it on the trickle all the time.

Gee,, Two mates bikes, (with fairly new batteries), with same so called battery / charge problem.... And there are some with similar situation...
A week between start ups, and battery has lost charge to an extent to course struggling at start up.... A battery tender is always a plus, but, battery on any vechicle should not really need the boost for such a short time in my opinion... Now this must happen to some, as they would not post up saying it is happening.....Could be a long shot , and batteries are failing … But have you done a basic charge test with volt meter ,,ie ,,, Voltage at idle ,,, Voltage at start up ,,,, Voltage at 2000 rpm......

well as I have never owned a Harley with a security system in wiring, I have no experience in that area.
just thought would mention a simple tool I have used for years, can pick up cheap in auto spares, has series of small lights with volts beside each light, has two wires with alligator clamps one positive & and earth.
I have always just kept a check on how many volts battery has, with this tool & I then fire motor up get raves up check regulator working. if volt while standing below 12.5volt I put battery tender on. this has worked well for me.

I had an issue when I had a Sporty a few years back. Charge would only last a few days, and sometimes discharged overnight. When it’s quiet if you can hear a solenoid activation sound then you have problems with the relays behind the side panel. Took half a dozen trips to dealers and in the end it was resolved by someone on these very forums. Once I had the relays replaced, battery was superb and could be left for more than a week and would still fire first time.
