Am getting a couple of new tyres fitted soon at the dealers, thought I would replace wheel bearings at the same time. Any recommendations for a proven good quality bearing to use? Maybe the brand the HD use is ok?

I'd go for a good quality Japanese set.
HD ones have proven to be not so great from all the feedback on this site.

Thanks FC , good stuff - that's exactly the type of feedback I was looking for - steering me away from certain brands.
I deal with bearing companies often through work, this is for pump/motor bearings, I will have a chat with the salesman (sometimes end up answering my own questions on the forum).
Now just got to get the bearing size/type from manual/parts book.

fitted new tyres at 47.000km and put new hd bearings in.the bike is s/h to me at 33,000km and no idea of history regarding the bearings. .the old ones could have done more but for the convenience/safety,didnt hesitate.was going to pack a little extra grease at the time they went in,but as they're double sealed i left them as is.according to the manual for my  '07 fxdl , the disc bearing goes in first [ gives the disc the correct aligment with the caliper ]till it seats on the spigot in side the hub, then the spacer, followed by the drive side which bottoms on the spacer.i used a lenght of 3/4" allthread with large flat washers that loaded the bearings across the inner and outer races at the same time, was an easy install, the first bearing was pulled in with a larger washer the held against the boss of the hub on the drive side.lubed the bearing bores with a light smear of engine oil to aid the fitting. same for the front wheel but only single disc, best to check with the recommended procedure for the model you have.hope this helps.cheers

    True Mark,
Getting tyres fitted is the perfect opportunity to replace the wheel bearings.
I'll let all know what I go with in the end.

Was told the same as Bruce mentioned with regards to installation on the front wheel, disc side first, spacer, then final bearing, I also tried to fit an 07 softail front wheel to my 07 wide glide, different depth bearing machining on the hub. Anyway, found the $40 dollar HD bearing part number is the same $ 8.00 skf bearing, Grant I to deal with bearing suppliers on a daily basis, mainly for industrial conveyors, and have found that in the dusty enviroments, it been proven that the cheap chinese brands just don't last. Jap brands are superior, the company I deal with use dodge, but not sure if they do the smaller bearing sizes.
Keen to hear what other guys on the forum  use.

Cheers Bruce for the comprehensive installation info.
Think will go for Japanese or SKF bearings.

Yeh Mark, as soon as I find the sizes needed will enquire directly with manufacturers reps about SKF or NGK etc.

Did you decide on a brand of bearing WG, I have been doing some more research, along with what a couple of the forum members have mentioned in other threads, All Balls bearings are pretty highly rated. Looks like you can get a set for about $45.00, from memory I think I paid $80 bucks for a set of HD bearings when I done the front tyre a couple of months ago, cant find the receipt.

Went down to my local Indy and grabbed a set of All Balls, they are actually KLM bearings re-packaged, 30 bucks for the set. At that price if they last as long as the rear tyre with no dramas, I'll just change them every time I change the tyre.

I have Performance Machine wheels & so still investigating if bearings sizes are same as stock wheels. Maybe just have to see sizes when taking the old ones out, but really wanted to purchase a quality set of bearings beforehand & have ready to go when doing tyre change.
