primary overfilled??

had my 2011 FXDC serviced by the stealer - just standard stuff, oils, filer, grease and the likes. Using SYN3 in engine and primary - standard for the tranny. All OK except for the gear shift - massive clunk when engaging and shifting and at times neutral hard to find. I know, most likely the primary overfilled...
Now in the olden days (2003 Ultra, '96 FXD) it was easy to check the levels - just pop the inspection cover and check level. Now of course there is no more inspection cover so no idea how to check the level... Any ideas?? use the Clutch cover to check level?? Or should I just drop 100ml out of the primary and see if that improves things??

    thnx
